Chapter 13 - Beneath the Blackwood Grand.

The river tunnel smelled of rust, wet stone, and forgotten machinery.
Owen used his phone light while Claire followed faded blue markings left by her father's construction team.
Evelyn struggled in her gold shoes but refused assistance.
Naomi counted the minutes aloud.
Rebecca remained at the tunnel entrance to coordinate with Daniel and emergency services.
The passage ended beneath the lobby in a circular maintenance chamber.
Above them stood the marble centerpiece, a sculpture of two hands holding a bronze sphere.
Claire found a ladder leading to an access panel inside the pedestal.
The first detonation warning changed to a continuous tone.
The demolition supervisor had not stopped the countdown.
Claire climbed into the narrow pedestal and discovered a steel compartment.
It required two keys.
Evelyn wore one around her neck beneath her gold top.
Claire's father had left the other in the Blue Room ledger.
Naomi had carried it without knowing its purpose.
They inserted both keys.
The compartment opened to reveal a sealed tube and a handwritten letter.
Claire removed them as the building trembled.
The letter was addressed jointly to Claire and Adrian.
Her father wrote that the Meridian Account had been created from money taken unfairly from investors during the families' early expansion.
The original certificate did not grant private ownership.
It required the entire reserve to be returned through an independently administered restitution fund.
Neither family could legally keep it.
Evelyn sank onto the wet floor.
For thirty years, she had fought to possess money that was never meant to belong to her.
Claire opened the sealed tube and found the original bearer certificate bearing the restitution condition.
Naomi photographed it and transmitted the images to regulators.
The signal failed before confirmation arrived.
Another tremor cracked the chamber wall.
Water began rushing through the opening.
They climbed toward the lobby, but the access ladder tore loose beneath Evelyn.
Claire caught the older woman's wrist.
For one suspended moment, Evelyn stared at the woman she had humiliated, framed, and tried to remove.
Claire could have protected the certificate and let someone else attempt the rescue.
Instead, she gave the document to Naomi and used both hands to pull Evelyn upward.
Owen helped drag them into the lobby.
The marble sculpture cracked behind them.
They ran through the grand entrance seconds before a controlled charge collapsed the eastern wing.
Emergency crews finally halted the remaining sequence.
Adrian stood beyond the barricade, watching Claire emerge with Evelyn.
His expression revealed shock for the first time.
Then he saw Naomi holding the certificate.
The shock disappeared behind calculation.
Daniel called Rebecca and announced that the seventeen-minute delay had expired.
The funds had entered the Meridian Account.
Under the original certificate, that transfer automatically subjected every dollar to restitution oversight.
Adrian had moved the stolen money into a structure he could no longer control.
Claire expected defeat to finally break his confidence.
Instead, he smiled.
“You still think the account is the prize,” he called across the barricade.
May you like
Then he entered a waiting car and disappeared into the rain.
