Their tone was professional, but the sealed folders told her the investigation had advanced beyond a routine inquiry.
The lead examiner introduced herself as Naomi Pierce.
Naomi displayed a transfer authorization bearing Claire's digital signature, biometric confirmation, and spoken security phrase.
The attached audio sounded exactly like Claire.
It even carried the slight hesitation she made before saying large numbers.
Claire listened twice and felt cold spread through her hands.
Someone had studied her closely enough to reproduce not only her voice but her habits.
She told Naomi the recording was fabricated.
Naomi replied that the bank's system had authenticated it in real time.
Claire asked who had supplied the supporting documents.
Naomi would not disclose the source.
The second examiner searched Claire's handbag with her consent.
Inside a hidden side pocket, he found a glass security token she had never seen.
Its serial number matched the missing transfers.
Claire realized that the dessert incident had served a second purpose.
During the confusion, someone had placed the token in her bag.
She described the moment to Naomi.
Naomi asked why a powerful executive had tolerated such public treatment long enough for anyone to approach her belongings.
The question sounded harsh, but Claire recognized its importance.
Adrian had needed her angry, distracted, and visible.
Every humiliation had been engineered to make her response predictable.
Claire requested permission to call Daniel.
Naomi allowed the call on speaker.
Daniel confirmed that the voice authorization came from a secure terminal in Claire's private office.
Claire had been at a board luncheon across town at the recorded time.
Naomi already possessed photographs placing her at that luncheon.
The contradiction should have helped her.
Instead, the images had metadata suggesting they were taken the previous day.
Every piece of proof had been prepared to survive the first challenge.
Claire asked Naomi to inspect the tower's service pantry and locate Martin Vale.
Naomi said Martin had entered federal offices voluntarily two hours earlier.
He had claimed that Claire ordered him to create the shell companies.
The attorney had not fled the dinner.
He had never truly been there.
The man at the table had worn Martin's clothes and resembled him, but the dark room and formal distance had concealed the differences.
Claire remembered the quick answers and the nervous glance.
Adrian had used a substitute to make her chase the wrong person.
Naomi temporarily seized Claire's phone and instructed her not to leave the state.
No charges had been filed, but the warning was clear.
When Claire returned to the dining room, most of the guests were gone.
Evelyn stood beside Adrian, looking satisfied.
Adrian approached and offered Claire his handkerchief.
She refused it.
He told her that the board would meet at nine the next morning to remove her permanently.
Claire asked what he had promised Martin.
Adrian leaned close enough that only she could hear.
“The same thing I promised everyone,” he murmured.
“A future without you.”
Then Evelyn handed Claire a white envelope.
Inside was a photograph of Claire's younger brother, Owen, entering Ashford Bank after midnight.
