The vault's emergency lights washed the Blue Room in a dim red glow.
Naomi used the internal phone, but the line connected only to a recorded message.
The building's evacuation system claimed the lobby was empty.
Claire had just seen three people there.
Someone controlled both the cameras and the alarms.
Owen's voice suddenly came through the speaker above the vault door.
He said Rebecca had not abducted him.
She had pulled him away from a man who tried to take the package.
Claire asked why Rebecca was wearing her necklace.
Rebecca answered instead.
She had found the necklace in Claire's office after discovering a hidden microphone inside its clasp.
Adrian had given Claire the necklace on their fifth anniversary.
For six years, he may have listened to private conversations, security phrases, and family memories.
The fabricated voice authorization no longer seemed impossible.
Rebecca explained that she had gone silent because Martin Vale warned her that her calls were monitored.
Martin had approached federal authorities after realizing Adrian intended to blame him for the shell companies.
The man at dinner had been a former hotel employee paid to imitate him from a distance.
Claire asked why Martin had accused her.
Rebecca said the statement shown to Naomi was incomplete.
Martin had reported that the orders arrived in Claire's voice, not that Claire herself issued them.
Someone had edited the summary before it reached Naomi.
The examiner's expression tightened.
The conspiracy extended into the investigation.
Rebecca instructed Claire to examine the inside cover of the Blue Room ledger.
Claire found a narrow compartment holding an old bank token and a handwritten ownership certificate.
The certificate proved that Evelyn's forty-nine percent interest expired if Blackwood funds were knowingly moved outside approved family trusts.
Adrian's transfers may have destroyed the very power he hoped to claim.
That explained why he wanted the ledger burned or trapped inside the vault.
Smoke began seeping beneath the steel door.
Naomi confirmed that the fire system had been manually overridden.
Claire searched the room and remembered her father teaching her that every vault required a mechanical release.
Behind the portrait of the bank's founder, she found a wheel recessed into the wall.
It resisted until Naomi joined her.
Together they forced it around.
The door opened six inches and stopped.
Owen reached through the gap with the package.
Claire pulled it inside.
The box contained a small drive and a note in her father's handwriting.
The note read, TRUST THE PERSON WHO LOSES THE MOST BY HELPING YOU.
Claire looked at Naomi.
Naomi had placed her career at risk by bringing Claire into the bank.
Before Claire could speak, Naomi's phone rang.
Her supervisor ordered her to arrest Claire immediately and surrender all evidence.
Naomi listened without expression.
Then she ended the call and removed her badge.
She placed it on the Blue Room desk.
“Your father was right,” she said.
“If we walk out with that ledger, I lose everything.”
