Chapter 3 - The Missing Attorney.

Security locked the elevators within thirty seconds, but Martin was no longer on the executive floor.

Claire ordered a search of the service corridors while Adrian accused her of holding the family against its will.

She ignored him and examined the broken glass near Martin's chair.

Beneath it lay a hotel key card from the Halcyon, one of the Blackwood properties Claire had rescued from foreclosure.

The room number had been scratched away.

Claire slipped the card into a clean envelope and handed it to security.

Evelyn demanded that she return everyone's phones.

Claire refused until the devices were photographed and their recent network connections preserved.

The relatives who had laughed at her now protested that she was humiliating them.

Claire almost admired the speed with which they had recast themselves as victims.

Adrian remained quiet.

He watched her as though measuring how closely she was following his script.

That thought disturbed her more than his smile.

Claire asked security to replay the hallway cameras.

The footage showed Martin entering a service pantry seconds before the blackout.

No image showed him leaving.

A second camera had stopped recording for exactly ninety seconds.

Only someone with executive credentials could have created that gap.

Claire, Adrian, and Evelyn possessed those credentials.

Evelyn claimed she had never learned how to use hers.

Adrian said his card had remained in his wallet.

Claire requested the access report.

The report showed that her own credentials had disabled the camera.

Adrian's expression became almost sympathetic.

“Your systems keep accusing you,” he said.

Claire remembered the biometric authorization attached to the transfers.

Someone was not merely stealing from the Blackwoods.

Someone was constructing a trail that pointed directly to her.

Daniel called again and confirmed that regulators had received an anonymous complaint alleging that Claire was moving client money to cover Ashford Bank losses.

The complaint had been filed that morning.

It included internal documents that only five people should have possessed.

Adrian suggested that Claire contact a lawyer.

She told him she already had one.

He asked whether that lawyer would still answer after seeing the evidence.

Claire called her counsel, Rebecca Shaw.

The call went directly to voicemail.

She called Rebecca's private number.

A man answered, remained silent, and disconnected.

Claire's confidence flickered, but she refused to let Adrian see it.

She directed Daniel to isolate her credentials and require two-person approval for every bank action.

Daniel hesitated.

The bank's board had already suspended her emergency authority pending review of the anonymous complaint.

The family heard every word because the room had become completely silent.

Evelyn smiled as if a verdict had been delivered.

Adrian stood and buttoned his jacket.

“Now that you can no longer imprison us with your title, I believe dinner is over,” he said.

The elevators suddenly returned to service.

The doors opened, but Martin was not inside.

Two federal examiners stepped into the dining room carrying sealed folders.

The lead examiner looked past Adrian and walked directly to Claire.

“Ms.

Ashford, we need to discuss a transfer authorized in your name.”

Behind him, Adrian allowed himself one quiet smile.
