Chapter 6 - The Blue Room.

Naomi secured permission to enter Ashford Bank shortly before dawn.
Claire accompanied her as a witness rather than an executive.
The distinction became painful when her own employees avoided her eyes.
News of the investigation had spread faster than the rainwater along the curb.
The bronze clock above the lobby displayed 4:36 a.m.
Claire imagined Owen standing beneath it at the time predicted by the photograph.
Naomi led her through the old vault and stationed two agents at the sealed corridor.
The wall covering the Blue Room looked untouched.
Claire found a concealed latch behind a brass plaque bearing her father's initials.
The panel opened with a tired mechanical sigh.
There was no water damage inside.
Rows of blue archival boxes filled the shelves.
Someone had lied for years to keep Claire away.
The central desk held a ledger, a tape recorder, and a photograph of Claire's father with Evelyn Blackwood.
They stood beside the original Ashford Bank sign, smiling like partners.
Claire had never known they worked together.
She opened the ledger and found two columns of transactions stretching back thirty years.
One column documented Ashford investments.
The other documented payments to Blackwood-controlled companies.
Many payments had been approved before Claire joined the bank.
Her father had secretly financed Adrian's rise.
A final handwritten note explained why.
Evelyn owned forty-nine percent of the bank through a dormant trust.
Claire's father had concealed that ownership to prevent a scandal during the bank's expansion.
If revived, the trust could challenge Claire's control.
Naomi photographed every page.
Claire pressed play on the old recorder.
Her father's voice filled the sealed room.
He said he had made a mistake by tying the Ashford name to the Blackwoods.
He warned that Evelyn believed loyalty could be purchased and inherited.
The recording ended with a message directed to Claire.
“If they force you to choose between the bank and the truth, choose the truth.”
Claire closed her eyes.
For years, she had defended an institution built on a secret she never knew.
Naomi found a recent fingerprint in dust on the recorder.
Someone had visited the room within days.
The vault alarm suddenly sounded.
The agents in the corridor reported smoke near the main entrance.
Naomi ordered an evacuation.
Claire refused to leave the ledger behind.
They placed the boxes on a steel cart and pushed them toward the vault.
The inner door began closing automatically under the fire protocol.
Claire saw a figure on the security monitor outside.
Rebecca Shaw stood in the lobby holding Owen's package.
Owen was beside her, alive but terrified.
Rebecca looked directly into the camera and raised Claire's necklace.
Then she pointed at the bronze clock.
It read 5:02 a.m.
The photograph had not predicted Owen's arrival.
It had predicted the hour when the vault would seal.
