Chapter 8 - The Woman Who Lost Her Badge.

Naomi wedged the steel cart into the narrowing vault doorway.

Metal screamed against metal as the automatic mechanism pressed forward.

Owen and Rebecca pulled from the lobby while Claire pushed from inside.

The cart buckled but held long enough for Claire and Naomi to crawl through.

They carried the ledger, the ownership certificate, and the drive.

The smoke proved theatrical rather than deadly, produced by canisters hidden beneath the reception desk.

Adrian had wanted panic, not casualties.

Panic erased details and made witnesses unreliable.

Rebecca led them through a loading entrance before the compromised response team arrived.

They gathered in the basement of a twenty-four-hour print shop owned by one of Owen's college friends.

Naomi, now acting without official protection, cataloged each document and created multiple encrypted copies.

Claire asked why she was willing to sacrifice her career.

Naomi revealed that her father had lost his retirement savings when a Blackwood investment company collapsed fifteen years earlier.

The official report blamed market conditions.

The Blue Room ledger showed that funds had been removed weeks before the collapse.

Evelyn and Claire's father had both signed the transfer.

Naomi did not excuse Claire because she had been unaware.

She simply wanted the entire truth preserved.

Claire accepted the distinction.

Owen opened the drive from the package on an offline computer.

It contained recordings made by their father during his final year.

In one recording, he confronted Evelyn about a hidden reserve called the Meridian Account.

Evelyn claimed it held money for a future crisis.

Claire's father called it a weapon designed to purchase judges, executives, and silence.

The next recording captured Adrian, then a young attorney, promising to erase the account forever.

The final file showed that he had done the opposite.

He had moved the reserve into a chain of trusts controlled through bearer certificates.

The certificates could be transferred without appearing in ordinary account searches.

The money missing from the dinner was only the newest layer.

Adrian had been building a private empire for nearly two decades.

Rebecca found a spreadsheet on the drive listing twelve certificate numbers.

Eleven had recent locations.

The twelfth was marked ASHFORD ORIGINAL and showed no location.

Claire remembered the glass token planted in her handbag.

Its serial number ended with the same four digits as the missing certificate.

Adrian had framed her with an object that might also identify his most valuable asset.

Naomi suggested that the token contained more than a serial number.

They examined it beneath the print shop's ultraviolet lamp.

A tiny pattern appeared inside the glass.

It was a map of safe-deposit boxes beneath Blackwood Tower.

One box was marked with Claire's initials.

Adrian expected investigators to discover it and connect her to the Meridian Account.

Claire saw another possibility.

If Adrian believed the token remained in federal custody, he would assume the box was safe.

Naomi reminded her that the token had been seized.

Rebecca smiled and produced an identical glass object.

She had replaced the original before the search of Claire's handbag.

The examiners had taken a replica.

For the first time since the dinner, Claire felt the balance shift.

Then every television in the print shop changed to a breaking financial report.

Ashford Bank shares were collapsing before the market opened.

Adrian appeared on screen announcing that Claire had disappeared with confidential bank records.
