Chapter 1 - The Slap Beneath The Chandelier.

.The marble foyer fell into a stunned silence when Emily Carter's palm struck Margaret Carter across the face.

The chandelier above them glittered as if nothing terrible had happened beneath it.

Seven-year-old Sophie sat on the floor beside the curved staircase with tears shining on her cheeks.

Her dark red velvet dress was twisted at one shoulder, and one small shoe had come loose.

Emily saw the red marks on her daughter's wrist before she saw anything else.

For one terrible second, she could not breathe.

Margaret lifted a trembling hand to her cheek and stared at Emily as if she were the victim.

Daniel rushed from the library with his tie hanging loose and shock written across his face.

"Emily, what the hell are you doing?"

Emily turned so quickly that Daniel stopped moving.

She seized the lapels of his light gray suit and pulled him toward Sophie.

"You let that woman put her hands on our baby!"

Daniel's eyes flicked toward his mother, then toward the child, then back to Emily.

That hesitation told Emily more than any answer could have.

"Emily, stop, she is my mother!"

"I am her mother!"

Margaret lowered her voice into the soft, injured tone she used whenever she wanted to control a room.

"Sophie had a tantrum, and I was trying to keep her from hurting herself."

Sophie flinched at the sound of her grandmother's voice.

Emily noticed it.

Daniel noticed Emily noticing it.

Emily released his jacket and crossed the floor toward Sophie.

Emily dropped to her knees and pulled her close.

Sophie buried her face against her mother's shoulder and began to shake.

"Mommy, I'm sorry."

Emily's anger became colder.

"You have nothing to be sorry for."

Margaret gave a small, disbelieving laugh.

"There, you see, she knows she misbehaved."

Emily looked over Sophie's head.

"Pack your things and leave."

Margaret's face changed.

The fear vanished first.

Then the wounded expression disappeared.

What remained was flat and calculating.

"This is not entirely your house, Emily."

Daniel went pale.

Emily slowly stood, still holding Sophie against her side.

"What did she just say?"

Daniel rubbed a hand over his mouth.

"Not now."

"Now is the only time you have left."

Margaret stepped toward the staircase as if she had already won something.

"Your husband has made certain arrangements."

Emily felt Sophie's fingers tighten around her sleeve.

"Daddy said Grandma was in charge when you were gone."

Daniel looked at Sophie sharply.

Emily did not look away from him.

"How long?"

He said nothing.

"How long has she been in charge of my daughter?"

The front doors remained open behind Emily, spilling summer light across the marble.

Daniel finally whispered, "Three months."

Emily's stomach turned.

She had been gone for four days, not three months.

Margaret folded her hands neatly in front of her burgundy jacket.

"You travel more than you realize."

Sophie lifted her face from Emily's shoulder.

Her next words were barely audible.

"Grandma said Daddy knows about the closet."

Daniel's head snapped up.

Emily felt every muscle in her body go still.

"What closet?"

Sophie looked toward the upstairs hallway.

Daniel moved between Emily and the stairs.

"Emily, please, don't do this in front of her."

Emily stared at her husband as if she had never seen him before.

Then she carried Sophie past him and started climbing.

Behind her, Margaret spoke with sudden sharpness.

"Daniel, stop her."

May you like

For the first time that afternoon, Emily heard fear in the older woman's voice.

And that was exactly why she did not stop.
