Chapter 14 - The Woman Who Wanted Everything.

Rebecca delivered the old investigation files to police before sunrise.
Detectives treated the audio as a lead, not a conclusion.
Emily understood the difference.
She wanted truth, not fantasy dressed as revenge.
Margaret was questioned again about Elaine Hayes.
Through her attorney, she denied involvement in the accident and called the recordings manipulated.
Forensic analysis found no immediate evidence of editing.
The charity records, however, opened another door.
Investigators discovered money had disappeared from the foundation Margaret managed two decades earlier.
The amount was small compared with the modern fraud.
Documents carried questionable signatures.
Emily stared at the report.
"She has been using the same method her whole life."
Rebecca nodded.
"Control the money, discredit the person, then rewrite the story."
"And I became part of the method."
Margaret's attorney argued that Emily's slap proved instability.
Rebecca did not deny the slap.
The court reviewed photographs of Sophie's wrist.
It reviewed the closet latch.
It reviewed Haven Bridge's pickup order.
It reviewed the false passport.
Then Daniel testified.
Margaret stared at him from the monitor.
"I failed my daughter because I was afraid of my mother and ashamed of my financial crimes."
Daniel continued.
"I signed documents I did not read."
"I helped create a false narrative about my wife."
"I did not intend for Sophie to be harmed, but my intentions do not erase what I enabled."
Emily listened without expression.
Margaret finally interrupted.
"He is confused."
Margaret's composure cracked.
"He has always been weak."
Daniel looked at the screen.
"That is why you chose me."
Margaret stopped.
Daniel held up a copy of the yellow legal pad.
"You called me an incompetent husband."
Margaret's eyes narrowed.
"You were."
Daniel nodded.
"Yes."
"But Sophie was never your solution to me."
Daniel received supervised visitation subject to Sophie's therapist's recommendation.
Emily should have felt relief.
Outside court, reporters shouted questions.
Emily gave only one statement.
"My daughter is not a symbol in a family war."
"She is a child, and she deserves privacy."
That evening, Sophie asked whether Grandma was going to jail.
Emily answered carefully.
"A court will decide what happens to Grandma."
"Is Daddy coming home?"
Emily sat beside her on the bed.
"Not right now."
Sophie thought about it.
"Are you still married?"
Emily's throat tightened.
"For now."
"Do you love him?"
"Part of me does."
Sophie nodded as if that made sense.
"But love doesn't make people safe."
Emily looked at her daughter.
"Who told you that?"
"The lady I talk to."
Emily brushed Sophie's hair back.
"She is right."
The forged signature had been created from a scan of Emily's signature taken from an old hospital consent form.
The form was from the night Sophie was born.
Emily felt nauseated.
"Who had access to it?"
Rebecca answered quietly.
"Daniel."
Emily closed her eyes.
He had sworn he never knew how the signature was created.
Emily called Daniel.
"I need you to tell me what happened to the hospital form."
Silence.
Then Daniel whispered, "I gave it to my mother."
Emily's heart dropped.
"When?"
"Three years ago."
"Why?"
His answer was barely audible.
"Because she said she needed proof Sophie was a Carter for a family insurance policy."
Emily stared into the dark bedroom.
Another careless signature.
Another door opened.
Another weapon handed over.
"Daniel, I cannot build a life with a man who keeps giving dangerous people keys and calling it a mistake."
He began to cry.

Emily did not change her mind.
The next morning, she filed for divorce.
