Chapter 5 - The Second Phone.

Emily carried the second phone into the library and locked the red folder beneath her arm.

Daniel followed her, while Margaret remained in the hallway as if she wanted an audience.

"Who is she?"

Daniel stared at the woman's photograph on the screen.

"Her name is Claire Maddox."

Emily waited.

"She was the broker on the development deal."

"Was?"

"The deal collapsed."

Another message arrived.

YOU PROMISED FRIDAY.

Emily held the phone toward him.

"What did you promise her?"

"A repayment."

Margaret walked into the room.

"Tell her the amount."

Daniel snapped, "Stay out of this."

Margaret sat in an armchair with astonishing calm.

"I have been cleaning up your disasters for thirty-four years."

Emily looked from mother to son.

"How much does Claire want?"

Daniel's voice dropped.

"One hundred and sixty thousand."

Emily felt almost numb.

"On top of the seven hundred?"

"It is complicated."

"That phrase has become your favorite hiding place."

She handed the phone to him.

"Unlock it."

Daniel hesitated.

Emily lifted her own phone again.

"My next call is to the police."

He entered the code.

Emily opened the messages.

There were hundreds.

Some were about contracts.

Some were about money.

None were romantic.

The relief lasted exactly three seconds.

Then she found photographs of signed loan documents using the mansion as collateral.

Emily zoomed in.

Her signature appeared on those papers too.

"You mortgaged my house."

Daniel shook his head quickly.

"The lien was never perfected."

"You attempted to mortgage my house."

"I was desperate."

"You were criminal."

Margaret leaned back.

"Now you understand why I stepped in."

Emily turned on her.

"You did not step in."

She held up the guardianship file.

"You moved in."

Margaret's mouth tightened.

"Someone had to protect Sophie from the consequences of his incompetence and your denial."

Emily caught the word.

"Incompetence."

Margaret looked away for the first time.

Daniel noticed too.

"What?"

Emily remembered the handwritten title she had glimpsed on a sheet inside the red folder.

She reopened it and flipped through the pages.

Near the back, tucked beneath financial records, was a yellow legal pad.

Across the top, in Margaret's handwriting, were two words.

INCOMPETENT HUSBAND.

Daniel went still.

Emily read the page aloud.

"Daniel is emotionally dependent, financially reckless, and easily motivated by fear of abandonment."

His face changed.

Margaret stood.

"Give me that."

Emily continued.

"Primary pressure points: debt exposure, marriage failure, loss of access to child."

Daniel stared at his mother.

"You wrote that about me?"

Margaret stepped closer.

"It was a risk assessment."

"I am your son."

"And you are a risk."

Emily almost felt sorry for him.

Almost.

The next line killed that instinct.

"Use Daniel's mistakes to establish maternal instability narrative."

Emily looked at Margaret.

"You planned this before he signed anything."

Margaret did not answer.

Daniel grabbed the pad from Emily and read further.

His hands shook.

"Phase two: separate mother and child through supervised transition."

Emily felt cold.

"Supervised transition to what?"

Margaret said nothing.

Daniel flipped the page.

A photocopy of a deed appeared beneath it.

The mansion's address was printed at the top.

Emily recognized the legal description from the estate papers her father had left her.

But the owner listed on this copy was not Emily Carter.

It was Carter Family Preservation Trust.

Daniel looked up in horror.

"Mom, what is this?"

Margaret's face finally lost its composure.

She reached for the document.

Emily stepped back.

"Who transferred my house into your trust?"

The room fell silent.

May you like

Then Sophie screamed upstairs.

Emily dropped everything and ran.
