Chapter 11 - The Perfect Victim.

By afternoon, news vans lined the road outside the mansion gates.
Margaret's photograph appeared on television beside the words MISSING GRANDMOTHER.
The story made Emily look monstrous in under ninety seconds.
Anonymous sources described her as volatile, career-obsessed, and controlling.
A grainy video showed Emily slapping Margaret in the foyer.
The clip ended before the camera revealed Sophie crying on the floor.
Emily watched it once.
Then she turned off the television.
"She leaked the security footage."
Daniel stared at the blank screen.
"The cameras were on her account."
Rebecca looked at him sharply.
"You allowed that?"
"She paid for the upgrade."
Emily laughed bitterly.
Rebecca advised Emily not to speak publicly yet.
"We need the full context preserved before we answer."
Margaret did not.
This one showed Daniel yelling at Emily during an argument six weeks earlier.
The caption called Emily emotionally unstable.
Daniel looked horrified.
"She recorded private arguments to use against you."
Emily stared at him.
"You helped create the arguments."
"I know."
Sophie was not allowed to watch the coverage.
Still, she heard reporters shouting from outside when Emily crossed the upstairs hall.
"Why do they like Grandma?"
Emily sat beside her.
"They only know the part she gave them."
"Will they think I'm lying?"
Emily's heart broke.
"People who matter will listen to you carefully."
Sophie looked uncertain.
"Daddy didn't."
Daniel had been standing in the doorway.
"No, I didn't."
Sophie looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because I was afraid of your grandmother, and I was ashamed of myself."
"That's not my fault."
"No."
"It was never your fault."
Sophie turned back to Emily.
Daniel left the room quietly.
That evening, the detective called with news.
Margaret had used a burner phone to contact her publicist from a hotel two counties away.
However, a hotel camera captured Margaret meeting someone in the parking garage.
Rebecca showed Emily the still image.
Daniel recognized him instantly.
"That is Judge Warren Pike."
Emily stared at him.
Pike was a retired family court judge and longtime friend of Margaret's late husband.
Rebecca's face tightened.
"He cannot hear cases anymore, but he knows everyone in that courthouse."
Emily understood the danger.
Margaret was trying to shape the legal narrative before she was found.
Rebecca began calling colleagues.
Daniel stood by the window watching the media lights beyond the gate.
"She used me, but I gave her the weapons."
Emily did not disagree.
"Then help take them away."
"How?"
"Tell the truth publicly."
Rebecca immediately said, "Not without preparation."
Emily looked at her.
"Margaret is telling the world Daniel protected Sophie from me."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"Then I will tell them I failed Sophie."
Rebecca studied him.
"Once you say that, you cannot take it back."
"I should not be able to."
The next morning, Daniel stood outside the front doors before a wall of cameras.
Emily watched from inside with Sophie safely upstairs.
Daniel admitted the debt.
He admitted signing documents he did not read.
He admitted allowing Margaret authority Emily had never approved.
Then he looked directly into the cameras.
"My wife did not abandon our daughter."
His voice shook.
"I abandoned my responsibility to protect her."
The reporters exploded with questions.
Daniel continued.
"Margaret Carter is not missing."
He held up the red folder.
"She is running from what she planned."
Before he could say more, a police SUV raced through the gate.
The detective jumped out.
"Get everyone inside."
Emily stepped into the foyer.
"What happened?"
The detective looked at Daniel.
"Margaret has been found."
May you like
Emily exhaled.
Then he added, "She is not alone."
