Chapter 8 - The House In Kentucky.

The address in Margaret's letter led to a farmhouse outside Lexington, Kentucky.

Rebecca found the property through a trust linked to Margaret's maiden name.

Emily wanted to drive there immediately.

The police told her not to.

"If she intended to take Sophie there, she may already have people watching the house."

Emily hated every second of waiting.

Sophie woke from her nap and refused to leave Emily's side.

Daniel remained downstairs unless Sophie asked for him.

When she finally did, his face crumpled.

"Daddy, did you know Grandma wanted to take me away?"

Daniel knelt several feet from her.

"No."

Sophie looked at Emily for confirmation.

Emily did not rescue him from the moment.

"Did you know Grandma said Mommy was bad?"

Daniel's eyes filled.

"Yes."

Sophie lowered her head.

"Why didn't you tell her to stop?"

Daniel had no defense left.

"Because I was scared of losing everything."

Sophie frowned.

"You almost lost me."

Emily felt the truth of those words settle over the room.

Daniel began to cry silently.

Sophie did not move toward him.

Later that evening, a detective called.

Margaret was not there.

The house, however, contained children's clothes in Sophie's size, school enrollment forms, a new tablet, and framed photographs of Daniel and Sophie with Emily carefully cropped out.

Emily had to sit down.

The detective continued.

There was also a bedroom decorated almost exactly like Sophie's room at home.

Sophie heard enough of the call to understand.

"She made a room for me?"

Emily nodded reluctantly.

Sophie whispered, "I don't want it."

"You will never have to sleep there."

Daniel stood by the window listening.

His mother had not been improvising.

Rebecca arrived with another discovery.

Eight hundred thousand went to repay Daniel's failed development investors.

Six hundred thousand went to a private family services company called Haven Bridge.

Emily stared at the name.

"What does Haven Bridge do?"

Rebecca turned her laptop.

Daniel went pale.

"Transportation?"

Rebecca nodded.

"They specialize in moving minors during custody disputes."

Emily's blood ran cold.

She called the detective again.

The officer promised to contact Haven Bridge immediately.

Ten minutes later, the detective called back.

"The company says Margaret Carter booked a transport service for this weekend."

Emily looked at Sophie.

"For whom?"

The officer's silence answered before his words did.

"A seven-year-old female child."

Daniel punched the wall.

Emily did not flinch.

"Pickup location?"

"Your residence."

Emily's stomach dropped.

"Pickup time?"

"Saturday at nine in the morning."

It was Friday night.

Margaret had planned to remove Sophie the next day.

The detective added one more detail.

"The booking lists an authorized parent."

Emily looked at Daniel.

"Whose name?"

The detective answered.

"Daniel Carter."

Daniel shook his head violently.

"I never signed that."

Rebecca leaned forward.

"Ask for the document."

Daniel's signature appeared at the bottom.

He stared at it.

"That is mine."

Emily's voice turned dangerously quiet.

"You just said you never signed it."

"I didn't know what it was."

He pointed at the date.

"She gave me a stack of company papers that day."

Emily remembered Margaret's legal pad.

Pressure points.

Debt exposure.

Loss of access to child.

Margaret had not only manipulated Daniel's fear.

She had weaponized his laziness.

Rebecca scrolled to the second page.

There was a handwritten note beside Daniel's signature.

APPROVED BY FATHER.

Below it, Margaret had written another line.

MOTHER NEED NOT BE INFORMED UNTIL TRANSFER IS COMPLETE.

Emily looked toward the dark windows.

Somewhere outside the house, a car slowed on the road.

Then the security lights went out.
