Chapter 12 - The Woman In The Back Seat.
Margaret was found in a church parking lot forty miles away.
She had been sitting in the back seat of Judge Pike's car.
The retired judge claimed he was helping an old friend seek legal counsel.
Police found twenty thousand dollars in cash beneath Margaret's coat.
They also found a signed affidavit accusing Emily of assault, emotional instability, and parental neglect.
Rebecca read the affidavit at the kitchen table.
"Most of this is opinion."
Emily pointed to a paragraph.
"What about that?"
It claimed Sophie had repeatedly asked to live with Margaret.
Sophie had said the exact opposite.
Rebecca nodded.
"That is a factual allegation, and we can challenge it."
Margaret was arrested on fraud-related charges connected to the deed and passport evidence.
She was not immediately charged for the closet incident because investigators were still interviewing witnesses.
Emily found that infuriating.
"She locked a child in a room and planned to take her across state lines."
Rebecca kept her voice calm.
"The investigation is building."
"My daughter lived it in one afternoon."
"The law will take longer."
Daniel's public statement shifted the media coverage.
Reporters began asking about the forged deed and the private transport company.
Margaret's perfect-victim narrative started to crack.
He claimed Margaret had feared Emily for years.
Emily stared at the screen.
"He is using Margaret's language."
Rebecca nodded.
"Because he may have helped write it."
He had called Margaret seventeen times in the previous month.
Emily recognized the name from the red folder.
"She is listed as the proposed evaluator in the guardianship petition."
Rebecca's expression darkened.
"Then Margaret was building a professional circle around the custody case before it existed."
Dr. Morris initially denied knowing Margaret.
She admitted Margaret had paid for a preliminary consultation about "a potentially unstable mother."
Emily had never met her.
Rebecca was furious.
"That is professionally indefensible."
The detective discovered Margaret had planned to ask for an emergency order immediately after taking Sophie to Kentucky.
Remove Sophie first.
Then argue the child was already safe and settled with Margaret.
Emily looked at Daniel.
"She needed your signature to make the first night look lawful."
"And I handed it to her."
Sophie began meeting with a court-appointed child advocate.
Emily was terrified of the process but refused to coach her.
When Sophie returned from the first meeting, she carried a sticker and looked exhausted.
"I told her about the closet."
Emily hugged her.
"You did well."
"I told her Daddy didn't open the door."
Daniel stood in the hallway.
Sophie saw him.
"I told the truth."
Daniel nodded.
"That is what you were supposed to do."
That night, Daniel packed a suitcase voluntarily.
"The order says I can stay, but I think Sophie needs space from me."
Emily did not stop him.
"I am going to my brother's apartment."
"Rebecca will need the address."
"I know."
"Tell Sophie I love her."
Emily shook her head.
"You can tell her when she wants to hear it."
Daniel accepted that too.
He opened the door.
A courier was waiting outside with an overnight envelope addressed to Emily.
There was no return name.
Inside was a flash drive and a handwritten note.
YOU ARE STILL MISSING THE FIRST LIE.
Emily looked at Rebecca.
"What first lie?"
Rebecca inserted the drive into an isolated laptop.
A single video file appeared.
The date stamp was eight years old.
Emily's face went pale.
That was before Sophie was born.
The video opened on Margaret sitting in this same foyer.
