Chapter 10 - The Mother Who Planned An Escape.
Thomas Vale was arrested before midnight.
The police found forged documents, cash, and three passports in his car.
One passport belonged to Margaret.
One carried Daniel's photograph under a different surname.
The third terrified Emily.
It contained Sophie's photograph.
The child's name had been changed to Sophia Bell.
Emily stared at the image until Rebecca gently took the copy from her hands.
"She planned to leave the country with Sophie."
Daniel sat across the room with his face buried in his palms.
"And she made one for me."
Emily looked at him.
"Did you know?"
"No."
She believed his shock.
The detective interviewed Daniel for two hours.
By morning, investigators had traced messages between Margaret and Thomas Vale.
Margaret had described Daniel as "useful only while frightened."
She had described Emily as "the obstacle."
She had described Sophie as "the future of the family."
Daniel read that sentence twice.
"She never saw Sophie as a person."
Emily's voice was tired.
"Neither did you when you used custody as leverage."
He flinched.
"I know."
Sophie remained upstairs with Nora, drawing pictures at the little desk by the window.
When Emily checked on her, Sophie handed her a drawing of the four people in the foyer.
Emily was holding Sophie's hand.
Daniel stood far away.
Margaret was outside the house behind a black fence.
Emily swallowed hard.
"Who is this?"
Sophie pointed to a tiny figure near the driveway.
"The camera man."
Emily looked closer.
The figure wore a blue cap.
"Did you see him before yesterday?"
Sophie nodded.
"He comes when Grandma has flowers."
Emily photographed the drawing and sent it to the detective.
Within an hour, police identified the flower delivery driver as Thomas Vale's nephew.
Rebecca arrived with emergency court papers.
A judge had granted Emily temporary sole decision-making authority for Sophie and prohibited Daniel from removing the child from the residence without written consent.
Daniel signed acknowledgment without protest.
"I deserve that."
Emily studied him.
"This is not about what you deserve."
"It is about what Sophie needs."
"Finally."
He nodded.
That single word hurt him, and Emily did not apologize.
Around noon, Claire Maddox contacted police through an attorney.
Her statement changed the case again.
Claire claimed Margaret had never intended to repay the bridge loan.
The money had been part of a larger plan to establish a private trust abroad.
The beneficiary of that trust was Sophie.
Emily frowned.
"Why steal money to give it to the same child?"
Rebecca shook her head.
"Because the trustee controls the money."
"Margaret."
"Exactly."
Daniel stared at the trust documents.
If Margaret had succeeded, she would have controlled Sophie's residence, finances, education, and identity.
Then Claire's attorney sent one more file.
Margaret's voice was unmistakable.
"Emily will fight."
Thomas Vale asked, "And Daniel?"
Margaret laughed.
"Daniel will do what frightened men always do."
"Which is?"
"He will choose the person who promises the easiest lie."
Daniel stared at the speaker.
Emily watched shame settle across his face.
The recording continued.
Thomas asked what would happen if Daniel confessed.
Margaret answered calmly.
"Then I will make sure Emily believes he planned all of it."
Daniel looked at Emily.
"She was going to sacrifice me."
Emily's expression did not soften.
"You still volunteered to stand on the altar."
Before he could answer, Rebecca's phone vibrated.
A news alert appeared on the screen.
LOCAL PHILANTHROPIST MARGARET CARTER REPORTED MISSING.
Below the headline was a statement from Margaret's publicist.
