Chapter 1: The Facade Crumbles

The grand ballroom of the Beaumont Hotel was a symphony of clinking crystal, soft jazz, and the low, murmuring hum of Chicago’s social climbers. For Eleanor, known to everyone in the room simply as "Ellie Vance," the evening was supposed to be a celebration. It was her rehearsal dinner, the final stepping stone before marrying Julian Thorne, a rising corporate executive whose ambition was matched only by his charm.

Or, at least, the charm he used to possess.

Ellie stood near the edge of the dance floor, smoothing down the satin of her champagne-colored gown. She looked down at little Leo, Julian’s five-year-old son from a previous relationship. The boy was tugging uncomfortably at the collar of his miniature tuxedo.

"Too tight, buddy?" Ellie asked softly, kneeling to adjust his bow tie. Her heart swelled as Leo gave a small, hesitant nod. Over the past two years, Ellie had become a mother to him in every way that mattered. His biological mother was long out of the picture, and Julian rarely had time for the boy. Leo was the brightest light in Ellie's life, and for his sake, she had ignored the growing red flags in her relationship with Julian.

She had hidden her true identity—Eleanor Sterling, sole heiress to the Sterling global real estate empire—because she wanted to be loved for who she was, not for the billions attached to her name. She had played the part of a struggling freelance designer perfectly. But lately, as the wedding drew closer, Julian had become increasingly controlling, irritable, and dismissive of her supposed "lack of pedigree."

"There you go," Ellie said, kissing Leo’s forehead. "Handsome as a prince."

Julian suddenly appeared beside them, his jaw tight, his eyes darting around the room to ensure the firm's senior partners were watching him. He reeked of expensive scotch and nervous agitation.

"Stop coddling him, Ellie. He needs to look like a man, not a baby," Julian snapped, grabbing Ellie’s arm a little too tightly and pulling her upward. "And stop slouching. You’re embarrassing me in front of the board."

"Julian, you’re hurting me," Ellie murmured, trying to keep her voice down to avoid a scene.

"Then act like you belong here," he hissed. He dragged her toward the center of the room, where a magnificent, three-tiered buttercream cake stood on a silver pedestal. It was meant for the ceremonial cutting, a photo opportunity for the guests.

"Smile for the cameras, Ellie. Try to look like you’re actually worth the money I spent on this night," he muttered under his breath.

Ellie felt a cold knot form in her stomach. She looked at the man she was supposed to marry tomorrow. The mask was slipping entirely.

Before she could process the thought, Julian’s hand clamped down hard on the back of her neck. With a sudden, shocking burst of violence, he shoved her forward. Ellie gasped, losing her footing, and felt the sickening, wet impact as her face was forced directly into the top tier of the wedding cake.
