Chapter 17: Passing the Torch

The crisp chill of early winter began to settle over Chicago, mirroring the shifting seasons within Sterling Enterprises.
Arthur Sterling’s health had stabilized, but the doctors were adamant: the stress of running a billion-dollar empire was a luxury his heart could no longer afford. He had spent the last few months quietly transitioning his duties, but today was the official changing of the guard.
The boardroom was packed with the company’s highest-ranking executives, legal counsel, and key stakeholders. At the head of the table, Arthur stood tall, leaning on his silver-handled cane. He wore a classic charcoal suit, his presence as commanding as it had been three decades ago.
"For fifty years, I have steered this ship," Arthur began, his gravelly voice echoing in the silent room. "I have built skylines, weathered recessions, and fought tooth and nail to make Sterling Enterprises a pillar of this city. But a smart builder knows when a foundation needs new steel."
He turned his gaze to Eleanor, who sat to his right, wearing a tailored ivory suit.
"I have watched my granddaughter step into this arena with a vision that honors our past while fiercely protecting our future," Arthur continued, a profound pride swelling in his chest. "Effective immediately, I am stepping down as Chairman of the Board. Eleanor Sterling will assume the role of Chief Executive Officer and Chairwoman."
A round of applause broke out, genuine and respectful. Even Thomas Harrington clapped without his usual scowl.
After the meeting dispersed, Eleanor and Arthur retreated to his private office—a sprawling, dark-wood sanctuary lined with books and architectural models.
Arthur walked over to his massive oak desk, opened the bottom drawer, and pulled out a heavy, antique brass compass. He handed it to Eleanor.
"My father gave this to me when I took over his small construction firm," Arthur said softly. "He told me that wealth can buy you many things, but it can never buy you a true north. You have to find that yourself."

Eleanor gripped the cold metal, tears pricking her eyes. "Grandfather, I don't know how to thank you. For trusting me. For saving me."
Arthur smiled, gently patting her cheek. "You saved yourself, Ellie. I just provided the car ride home. Now, this is your empire. Rule it with the compassion you have, and the iron you've found."
