Chapter 4: The Weight of a Name

The silence in the ballroom was absolute, heavy enough to crush the air from Julian’s lungs. He stared at the imposing figure of Arthur Sterling, his mind desperately trying to bridge the gap between the mousy, agreeable woman he had been bullying and the billionaire dynasty that owned the very ground he stood on.
"Mr. Sterling," Julian stammered, his polished corporate veneer completely shattered. He raised his hands in a pathetic gesture of surrender. "Arthur, please. This is a massive misunderstanding. We were just... it was a joke. A wedding tradition!"
Arthur did not blink. He signaled with two fingers, and his security detail moved seamlessly into the room, forming an impenetrable wall between the guests and his granddaughter.
"A joke," Arthur repeated, his voice dangerously soft. "You put your hands on my granddaughter in anger, humiliated her in front of your sycophants, and you call it a joke?"
Chloe, the woman who had been recording the entire ordeal, slowly tried to inch backward toward the exit.
"Stop right there," Arthur barked without even looking at her. One of the security men stepped into Chloe’s path, crossing his arms. "I suggest you delete whatever you just filmed, young lady. Unless you want my legal team to dismantle your life by breakfast."
Chloe frantically fumbled with her phone, her hands shaking so badly she nearly dropped it again, hastily deleting the video.
Julian fell to his knees, ignoring the ruined frosting on the floor. "Ellie, baby, please," he begged, looking at the woman he had abused just moments prior. "Tell him. Tell him I love you. I was just stressed about the wedding!"
Ellie looked down at him, her expression completely void of the warmth she had offered him for the past two years. She held Leo’s small hand firmly in hers.
"My name is Eleanor," she said coldly. "And there will be no wedding. I am leaving, and I am taking Leo with me."
"You can't do that!" Julian cried out, a momentary flash of his old arrogance piercing through his panic. "He's my son!"
Arthur let out a dry, humorless chuckle. "From what my private investigators have gathered over the last six months, Mr. Thorne, you have zero legal custody, and you leave the boy with nannies or my granddaughter while you entertain your 'colleagues' at expensive hotels." Arthur gestured vaguely toward Chloe. "You are an unfit parent and a fraud. If you ever approach Eleanor or this child again, I will personally see to it that you never work in this city—or any city—again. Do we understand each other?"
May you like
Julian opened his mouth to argue, but the sheer, crushing weight of Arthur’s power silenced him. He looked at the security guards, the horrified faces of his bosses in the crowd, and finally at Eleanor. He nodded weakly, defeated.
Eleanor turned her back on him, carrying Leo, and walked toward her grandfather.
