Chapter 11: The Ticking Clock

The transition of power at Sterling Enterprises had been smooth, but the reality of time was an enemy no amount of wealth could defeat.

It was a brisk Tuesday afternoon when the call came. Eleanor was in the middle of a tense negotiation with a steel supplier when Arthur’s personal assistant burst into her office, her face pale. Arthur had collapsed in his private suite on the top floor.

Panic, raw and blinding, seized Eleanor’s chest. She sprinted to the private elevator, her heart hammering against her ribs.

By the time she reached Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the press had already caught wind of the incident. News vans were parked outside, reporters speculating on the future of the Sterling empire. Eleanor ignored them all, flanked by security as she rushed into the VIP wing.

She found Arthur sitting up in his hospital bed. He looked frail, the harsh fluorescent lights accentuating the deep lines on his face, but his eyes were as sharp and stubborn as ever. He was currently lecturing a highly decorated cardiologist about the inefficiency of the hospital's Wi-Fi.

"Grandfather," Eleanor breathed, her knees nearly giving out in relief.

Arthur waved the doctor away and held his hand out to her. "Eleanor. Stop looking at me as if I'm already in a pine box. It was a minor cardiac event. A warning light on the dashboard, nothing more."

Eleanor pulled a chair to his bedside, gripping his hand tightly with both of hers. "You terrified me. You're supposed to be indestructible."

Arthur offered a soft, rueful smile, his thumb gently stroking her knuckles. "No one is indestructible, El. Not even a Sterling. The doctors say I need to step back. Permanently."

Eleanor’s breath hitched. "I'm not ready. I still need you."

"You haven't needed me for months," Arthur corrected her, his voice dropping to a serious, proud timbre. "I’ve watched you negotiate, lead, and inspire. You handled the South Loop project with a grace I never could have managed. I built this company with an iron fist because I had to. You are building its future with an open hand."

Tears welled in Eleanor's eyes. The weight of the empire was heavy, but the thought of losing the man who had caught her when she fell was infinitely heavier.

"I'll make you proud," she whispered.

"You already have," Arthur replied, squeezing her hand. "Now, dry your eyes and get back to the office. The wolves will be circling the moment the stock market opens tomorrow. Show them that the Sterling legacy isn't going anywhere."
