Chapter 6: The Morning After

Sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Sterling estate in the affluent northern suburbs. Eleanor stood on the terrace, wearing a simple cashmere sweater and holding a cup of steaming coffee. She watched as Leo played in the sprawling gardens below, chasing one of the estate's Golden Retrievers with pure, unburdened joy.

Her phone buzzed on the patio table. It was an alert from a local business news outlet.

Eleanor locked the screen and set the phone face down. Arthur's legal and public relations teams had worked with terrifying efficiency. Julian’s firm, terrified of losing their lease and the lucrative Sterling accounts, had severed ties with him by 8:00 AM. His social circle, purely transactional by nature, had already abandoned him.

The door to the terrace opened, and Arthur stepped out, leaning on his cane. He joined her at the railing, looking down at the boy in the garden.

"The paperwork has been sent to Thorne's apartment," Arthur said, his tone businesslike but warm. "He signed it an hour ago. The boy is yours, Eleanor."

Tears pricked Eleanor's eyes, but she blinked them away, smiling broadly. "Thank you. For everything."

"You don't need to thank me. You're a Sterling. We protect our own," Arthur replied. He paused, looking at his granddaughter with a newfound respect. "You handled yourself well last night. You didn't break."

"I almost did," Eleanor admitted. "But then I realized that Julian’s power was an illusion. I let him make me feel small. I won't ever make that mistake again."

Arthur nodded in approval. "So, what comes next? Are you going back to freelance design?"

Eleanor turned to face her grandfather, the early morning light catching the determination in her eyes. "No. I think it's time I stopped running from who I am. You've been asking me to take a seat on the board of directors for three years. If the offer still stands, I’ll take it."

Arthur’s eyes crinkled in a proud smile. "The corner office on the fiftieth floor has been waiting for you."

Eleanor looked back down at the garden. She had lost a fiancé, but she had gained a son, reclaimed her identity, and found her strength. The humiliation of the previous night felt like a lifetime ago. Eleanor Sterling was finally home, and her real life was just beginning.
