Chapter 14: Whispers in the Wind

The peace Eleanor had painstakingly built was shattered on a rainy Thursday morning.

She was in her office, sipping coffee and reviewing lease agreements, when her Director of Public Relations, a sharp woman named Sarah, burst through the door without knocking. Sarah looked pale, holding a tablet tightly against her chest.

"Eleanor, we have a situation," Sarah said, locking the office door behind her.

Eleanor set her coffee down, instantly alert. "What is it? Is it my grandfather? Is it Leo?"

"They’re both fine," Sarah assured her quickly, though her expression remained grim. She placed the tablet on the desk. "It’s the Chicago Chronicle. They just published a piece online. It’s gaining traction fast."

Eleanor looked at the screen. The bold, sensational headline read: THE RUNAWAY BRIDE: DID THE STERLING HEIRESS STEAL HER FIANCÉ'S CHILD?

A cold, familiar dread pooled in Eleanor’s stomach. She scrolled through the article. It painted a wildly distorted picture of her past. It claimed she had infiltrated Julian Thorne’s life under a fake name, deceived him, and then used her family’s immense wealth and legal muscle to forcefully strip him of his son on the eve of their wedding. The article included an "anonymous" quote from a "heartbroken father" who claimed he was bullied into signing away his rights.

Julian. He had burned through his settlement money and found a sleazy tabloid willing to pay for a scandal.

"Our legal team is already drafting a cease and desist," Sarah said, pacing the room. "We can sue the Chronicle for defamation, bury Thorne in litigation, and have a gag order issued by noon."

Eleanor stared at the screen. Her first instinct was to hide, to let the lawyers build a fortress around her and Leo. That was the Sterling way—crush the opposition quietly and ruthlessly. But she remembered the girl kneeling on the ballroom floor, covered in cake, paralyzed by fear and silence.

If she hid behind lawyers now, Julian still held power over her. He would still control the narrative.

"No," Eleanor said, her voice terrifyingly calm.

Sarah stopped pacing. "Excuse me?"

"No lawsuits. No gag orders," Eleanor said, standing up. "If we sue, it looks like we have something to hide. It feeds the narrative that the billionaire heiress is bullying the poor, defenseless executive."

The door to the office clicked open, and Marcus stepped in, having just caught wind of the news. He looked furious, his protective instincts on full display. "Tell me you’re going to obliterate him, Eleanor. Give the word, and I will personally see to it."

Eleanor looked at Marcus, drawing strength from his unwavering support. "I am going to obliterate him, Marcus. But I’m not going to do it in a courtroom." She turned back to Sarah. "I have a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new downtown arts center at two o'clock today, with a full press pool, right?"

"Yes, but we were going to cancel it," Sarah said.

"Don't," Eleanor commanded, a fierce light igniting in her eyes. "Double the press invitations. Tell them Eleanor Sterling has a statement."
