Chapter 2: The Breaking Point

The jazz music seemed to screech to a halt. A collective gasp rippled through the ballroom, followed by a heavy, suffocating silence.
For a split second, Ellie couldn't breathe. Thick, heavy vanilla buttercream filled her nose and blinded her eyes. The sheer force of the push had sent a jolt of pain down her spine. She braced her hands on the table, the cold metal biting into her palms, trying to steady herself as the humiliation washed over her like a tidal wave.
Then, a heart-wrenching scream shattered the quiet.
"Mommy!"
It was Leo. The little boy rushed forward, his eyes wide with terror, tears streaming down his flushed cheeks. He reached out with trembling hands, desperate to help the only mother he had ever known.
Instead of showing remorse, Julian’s face twisted with rage. He grabbed a fistful of Ellie’s frosting-matted hair, violently yanking her head back so she was forced to look at him.
"Get back in your place and stay there, you miserable parasite," Julian snarled, his voice echoing in the cavernous room. His eyes were cold, devoid of any humanity. He saw her as nothing more than a punching bag, a lowly woman who should be grateful he had elevated her from obscurity.
Ellie sank to her knees, gasping for air, chunks of cake falling from her hair onto her beautiful gown. Leo immediately threw his small arms around her neck, sobbing uncontrollably. Ellie’s maternal instinct overpowered her shock. She pulled the boy close, shielding him from his father's fury, whispering soothing words into his ear even as tears mixed with the frosting on her own face.
From the crowd, a sharp, cruel laugh rang out.
Chloe, Julian’s glamorous and viciously competitive coworker—and, Ellie had long suspected, his mistress—stepped forward. She was clad in a glittering sequined dress, her smartphone held high, the recording light blinking mercilessly.
"Smile!" Chloe sneered, stepping closer to get a better angle of Ellie on her knees. "The whole family should see this. What a perfect portrait of the blushing bride."
A few of Julian’s sycophantic friends chuckled. The rest of the room watched in stunned, cowardly silence. No one stepped forward to help. No one told Julian to stop.

As Ellie knelt on the hardwood floor, holding the trembling child, something inside her finally snapped. The love she thought she had for Julian evaporated, replaced by a cold, crystalline clarity. The charade was over. She had wanted to find out if a man could love an ordinary girl. She had her answer. Julian didn't love Ellie Vance. He despised her.
But he was about to meet Eleanor Sterling.
