Chapter 1 - The Ash and The Echo.

.The executive office fell into a suffocating silence.

Beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows, the city glittered in cold blue light while the lamps inside cast a low amber glow across dark wood, glass, and leather.

Adrian Vale sat in the center of that silence on a black tufted sofa, his broad shoulders rigid beneath a dark gray vest and his tattooed forearms resting carefully around the young woman asleep against him.

Mara Ellis looked as though she had spent every ounce of strength simply reaching the room.

Her olive-green button-down shirt was wrinkled, her brown hair was tangled around her pale face, and one hand remained loosely curled against Adrian's chest as if even sleep had not convinced her she was safe.

She breathed softly and steadily.

For the first time that night, she was not shaking.

Adrian looked down at her with an expression none of his employees would have recognized.

The man whose name could silence a boardroom was holding her as though a careless movement might break the only peaceful moment she had left.

The office door opened behind the sofa.

Evan Cole and Daniel Ross entered quickly, both still wearing sharp gray suits despite the hour, and Daniel carried a tablet glowing with a list of security alerts.

Evan took two steps before his eyes landed on Mara.

Recognition drained the urgency from his face and replaced it with disbelief.

He raised one finger to his lips before Daniel could speak.

"Quiet—don't wake her up."

The whisper barely crossed the room.

Adrian's eyes lifted at once.

The warmth vanished from them.

His right hand moved slowly toward the black pistol secured in the holster at his waist, not drawing it, but making the warning impossible to misunderstand.

Daniel stopped so abruptly that the tablet nearly slipped from his hand.

Evan stared at Adrian, then at Mara, then back at Adrian.

"Boss, you need to see this."

Adrian did not move.

"Then show me without waking her."

Daniel lowered the brightness on the screen and came around the sofa.

A surveillance photograph filled the display.

It showed Mara entering the private elevator of the Halcyon Hotel three nights earlier beside Julian Mercer, Adrian's chief financial officer and the one man in the company who had access to every protected account.

A second image showed Mara leaving alone twelve minutes later with a black folder pressed beneath her arm.

A third showed the same folder being photographed in the hands of Victor Kane, Adrian's most dangerous business rival.

Adrian's jaw tightened.

Mara shifted in her sleep, and his arm immediately steadied around her.

Evan watched that tiny reaction with a troubled expression.

"There's more," he whispered.

Daniel opened a security log from Vale Tower.

At 1:43 a.m., someone using Mara's employee credentials had entered the restricted records floor.

At 1:51 a.m., six encrypted files connected to Adrian's late father had been copied.

At 2:03 a.m., the building's internal cameras went dark for exactly four minutes.

Mara had appeared in Adrian's office at 2:11, pale, soaked by rain, and so exhausted that she could barely stand.

She had placed a silver flash drive in his hand and said only seven words before her knees gave way.

"Your brother never betrayed you, Mr. Vale."

Adrian had caught her before she reached the floor.

Now Daniel swiped to the final image on the tablet.

It was a still frame taken from the camera outside the records floor only seconds before the feed disappeared.

Mara stood in the hallway, looking directly at the camera.

Behind her was a man in a gray suit.

The image was grainy, but the face was clear enough.

Evan's expression hardened.

Daniel stopped breathing for a beat.

May you like

Adrian looked from the screen to the two men standing in front of him.

Because the man behind Mara was one of them.
