Chapter 13 - The Last Password.

Mara stared at the question and was no longer standing in Adrian Vale's office.
For one painful second, she was eight years old again in a small apartment during a winter blackout.
Her father had lit two candles and turned the dark into a game because he did not want her to be afraid.
She remembered sitting beneath a blanket while rain tapped the window.
She remembered asking him whether darkness meant something bad was coming.
Thomas had smiled and touched her forehead.
"No, kiddo."
Mara whispered the next words now.
"It only means we notice the light."
She typed: WE NOTICE THE LIGHT.
The deletion stopped with eleven seconds remaining.
Daniel immediately duplicated the archive onto four encrypted drives.
Evan placed one inside his jacket.
Noah took another.
Peter took the third and looked at Mara.
"Your father was smarter than all of us."
Mara shook her head.
"He was just tired of trusting one person with the truth."
The clock showed 4:46.
Fourteen minutes remained before the evidence release.
A heavy impact sounded outside the office.
The emergency team in the elevator shaft had reached the floor.
Adrian checked the corridor camera.
Three men in maintenance clothing moved toward the doors, but a fourth person followed behind them.
Julian Mercer.
This time the image was live.
The second hand on the wall clock behind him moved normally.
Julian stopped directly in front of the camera and looked up.
"We should talk."
Adrian opened the intercom.
"Talk."
Julian's eyes shifted toward the office door.
"You think sending documents at five changes anything?"
Daniel froze.
Julian knew the exact release time.
Someone inside the room had leaked it.
Everyone looked at everyone else.
Then Peter slowly raised his phone.
Its screen was dark.
"I didn't send anything."
Evan checked his own devices.
Noah did the same.
Mara looked toward the old cassette recorder.
A tiny red light blinked beneath it.
Daniel opened the battery compartment and found a second transmitter hidden under the memory card slot.
Julian had been listening since the safe opened.
Mara almost laughed from exhausted disbelief.
"He keeps making us suspect people when the answer is always access."
Adrian looked at her.
"Then we remove his access."
He walked to the office's main electrical panel and shut down every nonessential system on the floor.
The lights dimmed.
The intercom died.
The elevators stopped responding.
Only emergency lamps and the cold blue glow from the city remained.
For a moment, Mara saw the office almost exactly as her childhood apartment during the blackout.
Darkness did not mean something bad was coming.
It only made the remaining light easier to see.
Adrian returned to the sofa and removed the pistol from his holster.
Mara watched him carefully.
He placed it inside the locked desk drawer and turned the key.
"Why?" Noah asked.
Adrian looked toward the door.
"Because Julian wants a photograph of me becoming the man he says I am."
He handed the key to Mara.
"He doesn't get it."
Mara closed her fingers around the key.
At 4:52, Daniel finished routing the evidence through an external satellite hotspot Julian did not control.
At 4:55, Victor Kane called.
Adrian put him on speaker.
Victor did not waste time.
"I received a preview package."
Mara frowned.
"We didn't send one."
Victor's voice hardened.
"Julian did."
He had sent Victor selected files making it appear that Mara and Noah fabricated the archive together.
Victor paused.
"But he made one mistake."
Adrian looked at the clock.
"Which was?"
"He included a document I signed eleven years ago."
Victor had kept his own certified copy ever since.
The version Julian sent was altered.
Victor now had proof of forgery from outside the Vale network.
The clock reached 4:59.
Daniel placed his finger over the final release command.
May you like
Then every emergency light on the floor went out.
In total darkness, the office door unlocked.
