Chapter 10 - The Brother Who Vanished.

Adrian turned toward the conference room door.
It was twenty feet away and visibly closed.
Daniel checked the room camera.
Empty.
The photograph of Peter Shaw had been taken somewhere else designed to look exactly like Adrian's conference room.
Noah laughed once without humor.
"Julian built a copy."
Mara understood the purpose immediately.
"Not for us."
She enlarged the photograph.
"For evidence."
If authorities or the board later saw staged images of Peter, Mara, or Noah inside Adrian's private rooms, Julian could create any timeline he wanted.
He did not need reality.
He needed believable records.
Adrian looked at his brother.
"That's what happened to you."
Noah was silent for a long moment.
Then he nodded.
Four years earlier, Julian had shown Adrian photographs suggesting Noah met secretly with Victor Kane before confidential bid information leaked.
Noah had denied it, but the access logs, hotel footage, and phone records all appeared to support the same story.
Adrian had demanded an explanation Noah could not provide.
Noah left before the board could remove him publicly.
"I thought leaving would give me time to prove it," Noah said.
"Instead, it made me look guilty."
Adrian's expression tightened.
"I should have looked harder."
Noah finally met his eyes.
"You should have looked at me."
The words were quiet.
They hurt more because they were not shouted.
Mara turned away, giving the brothers a moment neither of them knew how to use.
Then the maintenance hatch above the executive hallway opened.
Footsteps landed on the floor outside.
Evan checked the door camera.
A man in a dark maintenance uniform stood alone, hands visible.
He removed his cap.
Peter Shaw looked directly into the lens.
Adrian opened the intercom.
"Why are you here?"
Peter's voice trembled.
"Because Julian knows I kept a copy."
Noah stiffened.
"A copy of what?"
"The missing page."
Mara looked at Adrian.
They could not know whether Peter was frightened, lying, or both.
Adrian left the door locked.
"Slide it under."
Peter shook his head.
"Not until I see Noah."
Noah stepped into camera view.
Peter closed his eyes with visible relief.
"I'm sorry."
Noah's expression became hard.
"For which part?"
Peter lowered his head.
He admitted that Marcus had discovered Julian's hidden network and ordered Peter to prepare legal documents protecting the company while the evidence was reviewed.
But Julian found out.
He threatened to expose Peter's own illegal tax arrangement from years earlier and destroy his family.
Peter panicked.
He certified the false investigation against Thomas Ellis and later authenticated forged records used against Noah.
"I told myself I was only signing paper," Peter said.
Mara stepped toward the intercom.
"Paper destroyed my father."
Peter flinched.
"I know."
For the first time that night, Adrian saw anger in Mara stronger than fear.
She did not raise her voice.
"Then don't ask us to feel sorry for you."
Peter removed an envelope from inside his coat and placed it against the glass beside the door.
"I'm not asking."
He looked toward the camera.
"I'm trying to finish what Marcus asked me to do."
The elevator shaft camera flickered.
Three more people were climbing above the stopped car.
Peter heard movement behind him.
"You have less than a minute."
Adrian made a decision.
He unlocked the outer door only far enough for Peter to pass through before sealing it again.
Peter entered holding the envelope.
Inside was a certified copy of the missing ledger page.
It carried Marcus Vale's signature, Thomas Ellis's witness mark, and Noah's temporary authority clause.
But there was another signature below them.
May you like
One none of them expected.
Victor Kane.
