Chapter 9 - The Elevator Camera.

The private elevator indicator glowed above the office doors.

Forty-six.

Forty-seven.

Forty-eight.

Adrian's office occupied the fiftieth floor.

Daniel reopened the camera system, but the elevator feed showed an empty car.

Mara shook her head.

"Looped again."

Evan searched the old blueprint for a manual elevator cutoff.

Noah found it behind a panel in the conference room.

Adrian pulled the lever when the indicator reached forty-nine.

The elevator stopped between floors.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then the office intercom activated.

Julian's voice sounded amused.

"Still relying on your father's old tricks?"

Adrian looked at the ceiling speaker.

"Still hiding behind other people's mistakes?"

Julian ignored him.

"Mara, you are making this harder than it needs to be."

Mara stepped toward the intercom.

"You offered me my father's name in exchange for Adrian's."

"I offered you reality."

"No."

Her voice steadied.

"You offered me another lie."

The intercom cut off.

Daniel checked the elevator maintenance diagnostics.

The stopped car had four people inside despite the empty video feed.

Adrian ordered the building's independent security team to secure the forty-ninth floor, but the command failed to transmit.

Julian had severed internal communications.

Noah opened Marcus's second ledger again.

"We need the identity of the second man."

Evan looked at the payment list involving his father.

"It could have been him."

"Marcus said the man sits closer to his sons," Mara said.

"Harold Cole worked security, not family."

Adrian walked to the framed photographs on the bookshelf.

One showed Marcus with Adrian, Noah, Julian, and a younger family attorney named Peter Shaw.

Another showed the same group at a charity dinner.

A third showed Marcus signing a merger while Peter stood directly behind him.

Noah pointed to the photograph.

"Shaw handled Dad's estate."

Daniel searched archived legal files.

Peter Shaw had also certified the documents that transferred executive authority to Adrian after Marcus died.

More importantly, Shaw had certified the internal investigation naming Thomas Ellis as responsible for the missing funds.

Mara's face tightened.

"He authenticated both sides of the lie."

Evan checked current records.

Peter Shaw had retired five years earlier and lived quietly outside the city.

But his law firm's corporate access credentials had been used inside Vale Tower only two days ago.

Daniel opened the access image.

A man entered wearing a visitor badge issued under Shaw's name.

The face was not Peter Shaw.

It was Julian Mercer.

Adrian leaned closer.

"He is recycling old credentials."

"Which means someone preserved them for him," Noah said.

Mara looked at the framed photograph again.

Behind Marcus stood another young man none of them had noticed.

He wore a gray security jacket and held a folder marked EXECUTIVE ACCESS.

Evan's breathing changed.

"That's my father."

The room became silent.

Harold Cole had been physically close to Marcus's sons for years, driving them to school, escorting them to events, and controlling every private entrance to the Vale home and office.

He had also received Julian's secret payments.

Evan looked sick.

"If Dad helped him, then maybe Marcus meant him."

Mara stepped beside Evan.

"Maybe."

"Don't protect me."

"I'm not."

She pointed at Marcus's wording in the transcript Daniel had generated.

"He said the second man sits closer to my sons, present tense."

Marcus had recorded the message near the end of his life.

Harold Cole had already been removed from executive duty by then.

Someone else still sat close.

Noah suddenly looked at Adrian's desk.

There was one person who had remained beside both brothers through every argument, every board meeting, and every family crisis after Marcus's death.

Their father's personal attorney.

Peter Shaw.

The elevator alarm sounded.

Someone inside the stopped car had opened the emergency hatch.

Noah checked the maintenance camera on the shaft.

A figure was climbing toward the fiftieth floor.

Then Daniel's tablet received a new file from an unknown sender.

May you like

It was a live image of Peter Shaw standing in Adrian's private conference room.

Behind him, on the table, lay the missing page from Marcus's ledger.
