Chapter 14 - What the City Heard.

No one moved when the door clicked open.

The city beyond the windows became the only light in the room, painting pale blue edges around furniture and faces.

Mara could hear her own breathing.

She could also hear Adrian's voice, low and steady.

"Stay behind the desk."

This time she listened.

The office door opened slowly.

Julian Mercer stepped inside alone.

He wore a charcoal coat over his suit and carried no visible weapon.

The three men behind him remained in the corridor.

Julian looked almost disappointed when he saw Adrian's empty holster.

"No dramatic ending?"

Adrian stood between Julian and the others.

"You came here for one."

Julian smiled.

"I came here to stop frightened people from destroying a company with old grievances."

Mara stepped into view.

"My father wasn't a grievance."

Julian looked at her as though she were still the exhausted archive employee he had tried to bargain with at the hotel.

"Your father made mistakes."

"So did Marcus Vale."

That answer erased Julian's smile.

Mara continued.

"The difference is Marcus eventually admitted his."

Daniel glanced at the laptop clock.

5:00 a.m.

He pressed the release command.

Nothing happened.

Julian's smile returned.

"You really thought I would let that connection stay open?"

Daniel checked the satellite hotspot.

The signal had been jammed.

Adrian's expression did not change.

Julian stepped farther into the office.

"Give me the drives, and I will make this disappear quietly."

Noah laughed from the shadows.

"That's your favorite word."

Julian's face hardened when Noah stepped into the blue window light.

"You should have stayed gone."

"You should have learned to build a plan that doesn't depend on everyone being ashamed."

Peter moved beside Noah.

Then Evan.

Then Daniel.

Julian looked at the group and seemed to realize that the fractures he had relied upon were closing.

Mara held up her phone.

"You jammed the hotspot."

Julian nodded.

"Yes."

"You blocked the internal network."

"Yes."

"You looped the cameras."

"Obviously."

Mara's exhausted expression shifted into the first genuine smile Adrian had seen from her.

"You forgot the city."

Julian frowned.

Across the avenue, the long-lens camera in the dark office window suddenly flashed bright white.

It was no longer Julian's camera.

Victor Kane's security team had taken control of the room after receiving Peter's location message before the power shutdown.

They were broadcasting a live encrypted feed of Adrian's office to independent counsel and the board emergency committee through a network outside Vale Tower.

Julian's words had already been heard.

His offers had been recorded.

His admission that he jammed communications had been recorded.

His reaction to Noah's return had been recorded.

Most importantly, Victor had already transmitted his certified copy of Marcus's original document to the same recipients.

Julian looked toward the window, finally understanding.

Adrian did not smile.

"You spent twelve years controlling rooms."

Mara finished the thought.

"So we moved the truth outside the room."

The men in the hallway took a step forward.

Adrian raised one hand.

"Don't."

They stopped.

The building's independent security team had regained access from the forty-ninth floor and was approaching from both stairwells.

Sirens were faintly audible far below, but the office remained strangely calm.

Julian looked at Mara.

"You think this clears your father?"

Mara held his gaze.

"No."

She pointed to the ledgers.

"Evidence clears him."

Then she pointed to Adrian, Noah, Peter, Evan, and Daniel.

"People finally telling the truth keeps him cleared."

Julian's shoulders lowered.

For the first time, he looked ordinary.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just a man who had spent years building walls from other people's fear and had finally run out of frightened people.

Security entered the corridor and took control of the situation without a struggle.

Adrian never opened the locked drawer containing his pistol.

Mara watched Julian leave.

She expected relief.

Instead, exhaustion hit her so suddenly that the room tilted.

Adrian crossed the distance before she fell.

He caught her exactly as he had at 2:11 that morning.

Mara looked up at him, barely awake.

"Did it send?"

Daniel checked his tablet as outside confirmations flooded in.

Board counsel.

Independent auditors.

Regulators.

Victor Kane.

Two journalists.

Noah's attorney.

He looked at Mara and smiled.

"Everywhere."

Mara finally let her eyes close.

Adrian carried her back to the dark leather sofa.

Evan instinctively started to speak.

Daniel touched one finger to his lips.

May you like

"Quiet—don't wake her up."

This time, even Adrian almost smiled.
