Chapter 3 - The Ledger Without Numbers.

Adrian read the message twice without changing expression.

Noah Vale was his younger brother, and no one inside the company had spoken that name in nearly four years.

Noah had vanished after being accused of leaking confidential bids to Victor Kane.

Adrian had never publicly called him a traitor, but he had never defended him either.

That silence had become the deepest fracture in the Vale family.

Mara watched Adrian's face carefully.

"That's why I came here."

"You said he never betrayed me."

"Because he didn't."

Adrian stood, and for the first time Mara understood how much effort he had used to appear calm while she slept.

"How do you know?"

Mara reached for the silver flash drive.

Daniel connected it to an isolated laptop that had no access to the building network.

Six folders appeared, each apparently empty.

Evan muttered, "That's useful."

Mara ignored him and opened the properties window.

Every folder had been created on the same date eight years earlier, two days before Marcus Vale died.

The folder names were not words.

They were six long strings of numbers.

Daniel assumed they were account references until Mara separated them into pairs.

Latitude and longitude.

The coordinates pointed to six locations across the city.

Five were empty lots or demolished buildings.

The sixth belonged to an old private storage facility near the river.

Mara placed the brass key beside the computer.

"Unit 314."

Adrian looked at her.

"You already went there."

"I tried."

Mara rubbed her hands together as though remembering the cold rain outside.

"Someone was waiting across the street, so I left before they saw me."

Daniel studied the building access records.

"If the elevators are locked, they know you're still here."

"They knew before I arrived."

Mara looked toward the dark window.

"Julian had a tracker in the folder he thought I stole."

Evan's eyes narrowed.

"Thought?"

Mara nodded.

"I switched the folder in the hotel elevator."

The black folder photographed in Victor Kane's hands contained nothing except old catering invoices.

Mara had slipped the real archive pages into the lining of her coat before leaving the hotel.

She had then given the empty decoy to a courier instructed to deliver it to Victor's office.

Daniel almost smiled.

"That's why Kane's people started calling Julian an idiot this morning."

Adrian's gaze sharpened.

"You met Kane?"

"No."

"The surveillance says you did."

"The surveillance says whatever Julian needs it to say."

For several seconds, no one spoke.

Then Mara reached into the laptop bag Daniel had brought and removed a legal pad.

She wrote four names.

Julian Mercer.

Victor Kane.

Noah Vale.

Thomas Ellis.

Adrian stared at the last one.

"Who is Thomas Ellis?"

Mara's fingers tightened around the pen.

"My father."

Evan looked up sharply.

Even Daniel recognized the name now.

Thomas Ellis had been a senior accountant for Marcus Vale twelve years earlier, before being publicly blamed for a financial scandal that destroyed his career.

The case had disappeared after Marcus's death, leaving Thomas with a ruined reputation and no chance to defend himself.

Mara's voice became quieter.

"My father spent the last years of his life saying he was framed."

Adrian's expression hardened with old memory.

"My father said Ellis acted alone."

Mara looked directly at him.

"Your father lied."

The lights in the office flickered once.

Daniel's tablet lost its connection.

Then the television on the far wall turned on by itself.

A live security feed appeared from the building lobby.

Julian Mercer stood alone beneath the marble clock, looking up toward the camera.

He lifted his phone and smiled.

The office phone rang at the same moment.

Adrian answered.

Julian's voice came through calmly.

"You have something that belongs to me."

Mara whispered before Adrian could reply.

"No."

May you like

She stared at Julian's image.

"He thinks he does."
