Chapter 5 - The Message at 2:17.

The magnetic locks released with a quiet click that sounded louder than any alarm.
Adrian motioned for everyone to step away from the entrance.
His hand rested near the holstered pistol, but he did not draw it.
Mara noticed that restraint.
For a man with Adrian's reputation, he seemed determined not to give Julian the scene he wanted.
The doors opened three inches and stopped.
No one entered.
A small black phone slid across the carpet and came to rest near the sofa.
Then the doors closed again.
Daniel scanned the phone before touching it.
No explosive device, no visible tracker, and no network connection.
Only one video file was stored on it.
The timestamp read 2:17 a.m.
Mara's face went pale.
"That's six minutes after I reached this office."
Daniel played the video.
Noah Vale appeared on screen.
He was older than the photographs Adrian kept hidden in a locked drawer, but there was no mistaking the familiar eyes or the stubborn line of his mouth.
Noah stood in a bare room with a concrete wall behind him.
"Adrian, if you're seeing this, then Mercer finally found the wrong person to scare."
Adrian leaned toward the screen.
Noah continued.
"Mara Ellis is not your enemy."
Mara covered her mouth.
She had not known the recording existed.
"Her father saved our family once, and ours destroyed his name in return."
Adrian's jaw tightened.
Noah looked directly into the camera.
"Do not make the same mistake with his daughter."
The recording ended.
Evan checked the metadata and found that the file had been created only three hours earlier.
Noah was alive, nearby, and still watching events unfold.
Daniel turned to Mara.
"When did you last see him?"
Mara hesitated.
"Three weeks ago."
Adrian's head snapped toward her.
"You met my brother three weeks ago and didn't tell me?"
"He told me you would never believe me without proof."
"He was right about that."
The bitterness in Adrian's voice made Mara flinch, but she did not retreat.
"He was also afraid someone inside your office would hear his name and warn Julian."
Daniel and Evan exchanged a look.
The accusation remained suspended between them.
Mara opened the old blueprint from the cabinet.
A handwritten red line marked a service route down to the forty-second floor, where an abandoned records room connected to the freight stairwell.
Next to the line, Thomas Ellis had written two words.
NO CAMERAS.
Adrian folded the blueprint.
"We go to the storage unit."
Daniel objected immediately.
"The building is surrounded."
"Then we don't leave through the lobby."
Evan checked the river access route on his tablet.
A loading dock beneath Vale Tower connected to an underground delivery tunnel used by several buildings on the block.
If they could reach it without being seen, they could exit two streets away.
Mara looked at Adrian.
"Julian wants me downstairs because he thinks I still have the archive pages."
"Do you?"
She unbuttoned the cuff of her olive shirt and pulled a folded strip of paper from inside the sleeve seam.
Daniel stared.
"You've had that the entire time?"
"Only one page."
It showed a sequence of approvals made under Marcus Vale's authorization after his death.
At the bottom was a signature belonging to Julian Mercer.
Adrian studied it.
"This proves he touched the accounts."
"It proves more than that."
Mara pointed to the time printed beside the approval.
"This transaction was entered while Julian was supposedly in London."
Evan looked at the system code.
"Then someone used his credentials."
Mara shook her head.
"Or Julian wasn't in London."
Daniel checked archived travel records.
The private jet manifest showed Julian's name.
The airport departure log showed the aircraft leaving.
But a security photograph from the terminal showed only three passengers boarding.
Julian was not one of them.
Adrian's phone vibrated.
A new message appeared from an unknown number.
YOU HAVE TEN MINUTES.
Then another message followed.
ASK DANIEL WHERE HE WAS AT 2:17.
May you like
Everyone looked at Daniel.
This time, he did not have an answer ready.
