Chapter 3 - The Auctioneer's Dilemma

The grand ballroom remained suffocatingly quiet after Eleanor’s bold declaration.

Madam Croft’s face turned a deep shade of crimson in her outrage.

She turned sharply toward the elevated mahogany podium at the front of the room.

Standing behind it was Mr. Harrison, the head auctioneer of the prestigious estate.

He was a tall, remarkably thin man with wire-rimmed glasses and a nervous sweat on his brow.

"Mr. Harrison, are you going to allow this madwoman to halt the proceedings?" Madam Croft demanded.

"This auction is costing us millions by the minute."

Mr. Harrison cleared his throat awkwardly, tapping his wooden gavel lightly against the podium.

"Madam, please," Mr. Harrison stammered, adjusting his glasses with a trembling hand.

"If the ring she holds is truly the Valeria Signet, we are facing a legal nightmare."

Lord Sterling stepped closer to Eleanor, his eyes dropping to the coat pocket where she hid the ring.

"It is not just a legal nightmare, Harrison," Lord Sterling said softly.

"It is a moral reckoning that this city has ignored for ninety years."

Eleanor stood unflinching, the puddles of rainwater slowly widening around her muddy boots.

She looked past the bickering wealthy elites, fixing her gaze on the velvet-draped tables near the podium.

"I did not come here to stop your little auction," Eleanor said, her voice cutting through the rising murmurs.

"I came for the final item on your ledger tonight."

Mr. Harrison turned entirely pale, gripping the edges of his podium for physical support.

The final item was a closely guarded secret, known only to the highest tier of bidders.

It was an ancient, leather-bound journal saved from the ashes of the Great Fire.

"How could you possibly know about the journal?" Mr. Harrison whispered.

Eleanor offered a small, heartbreakingly sad smile.

"Because my father wrote it," she replied simply.

"He recorded every name of every traitor who opened the palace gates that night."

Lord Sterling drew a sharp, audible breath, taking a slow step backward in profound shock.

If the journal contained the names of the traitors, it also contained the origins of the city's modern wealth.

It held the dark secrets of the very families standing in this ballroom.

Madam Croft’s arrogant posture suddenly stiffened, a flicker of genuine, unmasked fear crossing her eyes.

"Security!" Madam Croft shrieked, all pretense of elegance vanishing in an instant.

"Do not let her near that stage!"

The two guards rushed forward again, their heavy footsteps echoing over the marble floor.

But Lord Sterling turned to them, his voice booming with undeniable, protective authority.

"Anyone who lays a hand on the true heir of Valeria will answer to me."

The guards froze mid-step, trapped between the orders of the wealthy and the commanding presence of an aristocrat.

Eleanor simply watched them, her breathing calm and steady beneath the wet wool of her coat.
