Chapter 7 - The First Vow

The grand ballroom fell so silent that only the sound of the pouring rain could be heard.

Eleanor’s condition hung in the air, a heavy bargain of truth and restitution.

The wealthy elites looked at each other, the reality of her demand sinking into their minds.

To give up a portion of their fortunes meant changing the very fabric of their comfortable lives.

But to refuse meant the public release of the charred journal and the absolute ruin of their legacies.

Lord Sterling straightened his classic black tuxedo, his face pale but resolute.

He turned his back to the mahogany podium and faced his peers.

"We have lived in a palace of lies for far too long," Lord Sterling said clearly.

"The foundation of our society is rotting, and this woman has offered us a chance to cleanse it."

He slowly walked up the short wooden steps and stood beside Eleanor.

He did not look at her with pity, but with profound, unwavering respect.

"My family did not start the fire, but we thrived in the ashes," Lord Sterling confessed.

"I will pledge half of the Sterling estate to the rebuilding of the lower city."

A gasp echoed through the crowd, as half of his fortune was worth billions.

Eleanor looked up at the older aristocrat, a faint glimmer of hope softening her harsh features.

"Your words are noble, Lord Sterling," Eleanor replied softly.

"But words are easily forgotten when the storm passes and the morning sun rises."

Lord Sterling reached out and gently placed his hand over the ancient leather journal.

"Then let this book remain as our witness and our judge," he vowed.

He looked down at Madam Croft, who was still trembling near the front of the crowd.

"What say you, Beatrice?" Lord Sterling asked, using her first name to ground her in reality.

"Will you help rebuild, or will you let the Croft name turn to dust?"

Madam Croft slowly stood up straight, her hands dropping away from her diamond necklace.

She looked at Eleanor's muddy trench coat, then at the glowing red gemstone on her hand.

For the first time all evening, the arrogant woman looked truly humbled.

"I will pay the debt of my great-grandfather," Madam Croft whispered, her voice shaking but sincere.

"The Croft bank will fund the restoration."

Eleanor nodded slowly, her tense shoulders finally beginning to drop.
