Chapter 6 - The Price of Silence

The cold dread settled heavily over the luxurious grand ballroom.

Wealthy guests exchanged terrified glances, their dark family secrets suddenly hanging by a thread.

A tall, broad-shouldered man in a tailored grey suit stepped aggressively out of the crowd.

His face was flushed with sudden anger, and his fists were clenched tightly at his sides.

"We are not going to let a crazy old woman dictate our lives!" the man shouted.

"Burn that book, Harrison, or I will do it myself!"

The man lunged forward, charging directly toward the mahogany podium.

Eleanor did not flinch, her muddy hands gently closing the fragile cover of the journal.

Before the angry man could reach the wooden steps, Lord Sterling intercepted him.

The older aristocrat moved with surprising speed, grabbing the furious man by his lapels.

Lord Sterling shoved him firmly back into the crowd of stunned onlookers.

"Have you not done enough damage to this kingdom?" Lord Sterling roared, his voice shaking with righteous fury.

The man stumbled back, his aggressive demeanor shattering completely under the aristocrat's glare.

Eleanor watched the brief scuffle with a deep, weary sadness in her weathered eyes.

She picked up the gold signet ring from the small black velvet cushion.

Slowly, she slipped the heavy ring onto her own trembling, dirt-stained finger.

The crimson gemstone caught the chandelier light, seeming to glow with an ancient fire.

"I did not come here to destroy your lives," Eleanor said, her voice echoing clearly over the silence.

The wealthy elites stopped their frantic whispering, leaning in to hear her unexpected words.

"Revenge will not bring back my family, nor will it rebuild the eastern wing."

Madam Croft looked up from the floor, tears of humiliation ruining her perfect makeup.

"Then what do you want from us?" Madam Croft asked, her voice breaking.

Eleanor looked around the brightly lit room, observing the unimaginable, stolen luxury.

"I want the truth to be known, written in the history books for the world to see," she answered.

"And I want the wealth that built this room to rebuild the city you abandoned."
