Chapter 4 - The Weight of Ashes

The guards remained rooted to the polished marble floor.
Lord Sterling's authoritative stance formed an invisible shield around Eleanor.
The wealthy guests began to step back, creating a wide path toward the mahogany podium.
Their panicked whispers dissolved into a heavy, suffocating silence.
Eleanor began to walk forward again.
Her wet, muddy boots squeaked softly against the pristine stone.
Mr. Harrison watched her approach with wide, terrified eyes.
He nervously adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses, his hands shaking violently.
Madam Croft clutched her diamond necklace, her breathing shallow and erratic.
"You cannot let her take that book," Madam Croft hissed to the surrounding crowd.
"It will destroy everything our families have built."
Lord Sterling turned his head slightly, his gaze cold and analytical.
"Perhaps a foundation built on treason deserves to crumble, Madam Croft," he said quietly.
Eleanor reached the short wooden steps of the elevated podium.
She looked down at the velvet-draped table resting beside Mr. Harrison.
A small, secure glass display case sat under a focused spotlight.
Inside the glass rested a charred, leather-bound journal.
The edges of the thick parchment were permanently blackened from a fire that burned nearly a century ago.
Eleanor reached into her coat and brought out the gold signet ring once more.
She placed the small black velvet cushion gently on top of the glass case.
"Open it," Eleanor commanded, her voice barely louder than a whisper.
Mr. Harrison swallowed hard, looking toward the silent, watching elite for help.
Nobody moved to stop him.
With trembling fingers, the auctioneer unlocked the small brass latch of the display case.
He lifted the heavy glass lid, exposing the fragile artifact to the open air.
The faint, lingering smell of old smoke and dried parchment drifted into the luxurious room.
Eleanor reached out with her weathered, trembling hand.
She did not grab the book with greed or sudden anger.
She traced the charred leather with the profound tenderness of a grieving daughter.
A single tear finally escaped her eye, tracing a clean line down her muddy cheek.

She took a slow, natural breath, closing her eyes for just a moment.
"I have waited a lifetime to hold his words again," she murmured.
