Chapter 5 - The Sins of the Fathers

Eleanor carefully opened the fragile, charred cover of the journal.

The brittle pages crinkled softly in the quiet grand ballroom.

Every wealthy guest held their breath, their eyes fixed entirely on the old woman.

The dark ink inside was faded, but unmistakably clear under the bright chandelier light.

Eleanor’s eyes scanned the elegant, sweeping handwriting of her late father.

She paused, her weathered finger coming to rest on a specific, darkened line.

"The night the eastern wing burned," Eleanor began, her voice echoing in the vast space.

"My father wrote down the names of the guards who unlocked the iron gates."

She looked up slowly, her intense gaze locking directly onto Madam Croft.

"He also wrote down the name of the man who paid them to do it."

Madam Croft took a sudden step backward, her arrogant facade crumbling into pale terror.

"Lies," Madam Croft whispered, her voice completely lacking its previous venom.

"It was a man named Arthur Croft," Eleanor read calmly from the ancient, ash-stained page.

"A minor merchant who suddenly acquired a vast, inexplicable fortune overnight."

The crowd erupted into shocked, frantic murmurs.

People instinctively began to distance themselves from Madam Croft, leaving her isolated.

Lord Sterling stepped closer to the podium, his face a mask of grim realization.

"Arthur Croft was your great-grandfather," Lord Sterling said to the trembling woman.

"He founded the Croft banking empire less than a month after the Great Fire."

Madam Croft shook her head frantically, clutching her heavy diamond necklace as if it were choking her.

"You cannot hold me responsible for something that happened a century ago," she cried out.

Eleanor gently turned another brittle page of the journal.

She did not raise her voice, but her quiet words carried a heavy, undeniable weight.

"I do not blame you for his sins, Madam," Eleanor said softly.

"But I do blame you for wearing the stolen wealth of my family around your neck."

Madam Croft looked down at her glowing diamonds, her hands dropping to her sides in defeat.

Eleanor turned her attention back to the silent, terrified crowd of elites.

"There are dozens of names in this ledger," she announced quietly.

"This room is filled with the descendants of those who betrayed the crown."

The oppressive tension in the grand ballroom transformed into a cold, creeping dread.
