Chapter 8 - The Connecting Thread

The breakthrough came two days later. Eleanor was in her home office when Arthur called, his usually monotone voice laced with urgency. He had managed to unseal Lily’s heavily redacted foster care files and cross-reference them with public health records.

"Eleanor," Arthur began carefully. "I found Lily and Sarah's mother."

Eleanor’s heart hammered against her ribs. "Is it Maya? Is she alive?"

There was a heavy pause on the line. "Her name was Maya Roberts. She passed away five years ago from untreated pneumonia. I am so sorry, Eleanor. But the DNA markers on file confirm it. Maya was your sister."

Tears spilled over Eleanor’s eyelashes, blurring her vision. Maya was gone. The sister she had spent a lifetime searching for had slipped away in the cold machinery of poverty.

"But there's more," Arthur continued. "Sarah is twenty-two now. Lily is ten. They aren't just girls who happened to find your sister's wallet. Eleanor, they are Maya's daughters. They are your nieces."

Eleanor dropped the phone. She buried her face in her hands and wept—for the sister she couldn't save, and for the family she hadn't known she had.
