Chapter 10 - The Things She Said About Him.

Vanessa asked Doctor Soren and Claire to stay.

Adrian said nothing.

That silence frightened her more than his anger had.

She folded her hands in her lap.

"Two months after Lena died, Dad asked me how often you were home."

Adrian looked at Noah.

"What did you say?"

"The truth."

"Which version?"

Vanessa flinched.

"That you were working late."

"I was."

"That you traveled twice."

"I did."

"That the night nurse handled most feedings."

Adrian nodded once.

"She did."

Vanessa swallowed.

"I also said you froze when Noah cried."

Adrian's jaw tightened.

Claire remembered the first ten minutes of the flight.

That had been true too.

Vanessa continued.

"I said you sometimes left the room."

Adrian stared at her.

"Because I could hear Lena."

"I know that now."

"You knew it then."

Vanessa looked down.

"I knew you said it."

Claire heard the distinction.

Vanessa had heard her brother's grief but had not believed his explanation deserved more weight than her interpretation.

Adrian did not raise his voice.

"What else?"

"I told them you missed a pediatric appointment."

"I was in Boston."

"I know."

"I called in."

"I didn't tell them that."

Adrian gave a short laugh.

"Of course not."

"I wasn't trying to build a case."

"You were building a story."

Vanessa's eyes filled.

"Yes."

The honesty stopped him.

Claire watched Adrian look at his sister as if deciding whether to attack the confession or accept it.

He chose neither.

"What story?"

Vanessa breathed in.

"That you needed us."

Adrian looked away.

Vanessa continued.

"I thought if Dad believed you couldn't manage alone, he'd force you to slow down."

"You could have asked me."

"You would have said no."

"Then no was my answer."

Vanessa covered her face for a moment.

"I know."

The jet began its gradual descent.

The engine tone changed.

Noah stirred and started to cry.

Every adult in the cabin looked at Adrian.

He noticed.

"So now this is a test?"

Claire answered first.

"No."

Adrian looked at her.

"It's just your son."

The tension left his face.

He nodded.

He lifted Noah upright against his chest.

He hummed Lena's four notes.

Noah cried louder.

Adrian did not panic.

He checked the diaper.

Fine.

He offered the bottle.

Noah turned away.

Adrian smiled sadly.

"Not that."

He held him closer.

The baby fussed.

Adrian rubbed the small blue blanket near Noah's cheek.

The infant gripped it.

His cry softened.

Vanessa watched with tears running silently down her face.

Adrian looked at her.

"He's not evidence."

She nodded.

"No."

"He's not proof that I'm stable."

"No."

"He's not proof that you were wrong."

Vanessa swallowed.

"No."

"He's Noah."

"Yes."

Adrian looked down.

The baby settled.

The captain announced ten minutes to landing.

Vanessa's phone rang.

MARTIN COLE.

She stared at it.

Adrian said nothing.

Vanessa answered.

"Dad."

Martin's voice came through loudly.

Vanessa's expression changed as she listened.

"No."

Adrian looked up.

Vanessa sat straighter.

"No, I'm not bringing Adrian to the conference room."

A pause.

"No, I did not know the petition used my statement."

Another pause.

Vanessa's face hardened.

"And I did not authorize you to list me as a witness."

Adrian stared.

Martin's voice rose.

Vanessa's hand shook.

Then she said the sentence Adrian had been saying all afternoon.

"No."

She ended the call.

For several seconds no one spoke.

Adrian almost smiled.

"How did that feel?"

"Terrible."

"It gets easier."

Vanessa laughed despite herself.

Doctor Soren checked his email.

"I've sent the letter denying authorship of the assessment."

Adrian nodded.

"Thank you."

Claire returned to her seat for landing.

The aircraft descended through thick gray cloud.

Outside, the world disappeared.

Inside, Adrian held Noah with one hand and Lena's old phone with the other.

The wheels touched down firmly.

Noah startled.

Adrian whispered, "I've got you."

The baby settled before the aircraft slowed.

Claire closed her eyes for one second.

That was the real turning point.

Not the bottle.

Not the blanket.

Not the legal threat.

The father had spoken the words without needing anyone to tell him what to do.

When the jet finally stopped, Vanessa looked through the window toward the private terminal.

Her face went pale.

"Adrian."

He leaned toward the glass.

Three black cars waited near the building.

Beside them stood Martin Cole, Adrian's mother Eleanor, and a man holding a leather document case.

Vanessa whispered, "They came anyway."

Adrian looked down at Noah.

May you like

Then he slowly smiled.

"Good."
