Chapter 12 - The Truth Behind the Forged Assessment.

Adrian read the message again.

Martin noticed.

"What now?"

Adrian looked at his father.

"Apparently my attorney found something."

Martin's expression did not change.

That frightened Vanessa.

She had spent her entire life reading her father's face.

Claire saw recognition pass through hers.

"Martin," Vanessa said slowly.

"What did you do?"

Martin looked offended.

"I protected this family."

Adrian's voice cooled.

"That isn't an answer."

Martin turned toward the terminal.

"We are not discussing legal matters on a runway."

Adrian almost laughed.

"You brought a lawyer to a runway."

Thomas, the attorney holding the document case, looked uncomfortable.

"Mr. Cole, I think it would be wise to pause."

Martin glared at him.

Adrian's phone rang.

His own attorney, Maya Chen.

He answered on speaker only after asking if she was comfortable with the people present.

Maya's voice was clear and direct.

"We traced the document metadata from the copy sent to family counsel."

Martin's jaw tightened.

Vanessa looked sick.

Maya continued.

"The file was created from a template downloaded by an outside family-risk consultant."

Adrian frowned.

"I've never hired one."

"No."

Maya paused.

"Your father did."

Eleanor turned toward Martin.

"What?"

Martin did not answer.

Maya continued.

"The consultant says he was asked to prepare a draft summary based on secondhand concerns."

Doctor Soren's expression hardened.

"Using my name?"

"According to the consultant, he was told formal medical confirmation would follow."

Adrian looked at Martin.

"It didn't."

Maya continued.

"The consultant says the draft should never have been circulated as a signed medical opinion."

Thomas closed his eyes.

Vanessa whispered, "Dad."

Martin finally spoke.

"I was told Soren agreed with the substance."

Doctor Soren answered immediately.

"I did not."

Martin looked at him with open irritation.

"You said Adrian was struggling."

"I said a widowed father was grieving."

"That is struggling."

"That is not incapacity."

The words landed cleanly.

Claire watched Adrian absorb them.

For months, his grief had been translated into a verdict.

Now a doctor was finally separating pain from incompetence.

Maya continued through the phone.

"The petition is based partly on that document, so its credibility is severely compromised."

Adrian asked, "Can they still file?"

"Anyone can file many things."

Her tone remained calm.

"That does not mean they can prove them."

Adrian looked down at Noah.

"Thank you."

"I recommend you go home."

Claire almost smiled.

That was exactly what she had said.

Maya added, "And Adrian?"

"Yes?"

"Do not let anyone bait you into a dramatic scene."

Everyone looked at Martin.

Vanessa coughed to hide a laugh.

Even Adrian smiled.

"I'll try."

He ended the call.

Martin's face was red.

"You think this is funny?"

Adrian shook his head.

"No."

He stepped closer.

"I think it is sad."

Martin stared.

"You were so determined to prevent me from failing that you decided failure had already happened."

Martin's eyes narrowed.

"You were not there."

"No."

Adrian nodded.

"I wasn't."

That admission stole Martin's next argument.

Adrian continued.

"I missed mornings."

"I worked too much."

"I let fear decide who held my son."

Eleanor was crying now.

Adrian looked at her.

"But I am not signing him over because all of you were frightened."

Eleanor whispered, "We didn't want to lose him too."

Adrian's face softened.

"You weren't going to."

She looked at the baby.

"We lost Lena."

"I know."

"We couldn't survive something happening to Noah."

Adrian took a breath.

"Neither could I."

That was the sentence no one had been saying.

They had treated Adrian like the threat because they could not face the fact that he was afraid of the same loss.

Claire watched Eleanor understand it.

Martin did not.

He looked toward Thomas.

"File anyway."

Thomas hesitated.

Martin turned sharply.

"Did you hear me?"

Thomas closed the document case.

"I heard you."

"Then file."

"No."

Everyone went still.

Thomas adjusted his glasses.

"The document issue materially changes my advice."

Martin looked stunned.

Thomas continued.

"I will not present a draft medical assessment as a signed medical conclusion."

Martin's anger finally cracked through his polished exterior.

"You work for me."

Thomas answered quietly.

"I work under professional obligations."

Vanessa looked at Adrian.

He gave the smallest nod.

Another person had said no.

Martin turned away.

"This family has lost its mind."

Adrian looked down at Noah.

The baby had fallen asleep again.

"No."

He kissed the top of his son's head.

"I think we're finally using it."

Claire expected that to be the end of the confrontation.

Then Eleanor reached into her handbag.

"Adrian."

He turned.

She held out a sealed envelope.

"Lena gave me this two weeks before Noah was born."

Adrian stared at it.

"Why do you have it?"

Eleanor's hand shook.

"Because she made me promise not to give it to you until you stopped letting your father make every decision."

Martin's face changed.

Adrian looked from the envelope to his mother.

"You had this the entire time?"

May you like

Eleanor began to cry.

"Yes."
