Chapter 11 - The People Waiting on the Ground.

The cabin door opened to cold afternoon air.

Claire expected Adrian to rush.

He did not.

He changed Noah's diaper first.

Vanessa watched him in disbelief.

"Your father is standing outside."

"So is my son."

"He'll say you're making him wait."

Adrian fastened Noah's onesie.

"He can survive it."

Claire hid a smile.

Doctor Soren packed his bag.

The cabin attendant brought Adrian's coat.

He declined it until Noah was secured in the carrier against his chest.

The choice was small.

It still felt symbolic.

Adrian looked at Claire.

"Are you headed into the terminal?"

"Yes."

"Would you mind walking with us?"

Claire hesitated.

Vanessa spoke before she could.

"Please."

Claire nodded.

She did not want to become a weapon in a family dispute.

But she also did not want Adrian facing a group of angry relatives while carrying a tired infant.

They stepped onto the tarmac together.

Martin Cole stood near the terminal doors.

He was tall, silver-haired, and visibly furious.

Eleanor stood beside him in an elegant camel coat.

The attorney remained half a step behind them.

Martin's gaze went directly to Claire.

"Who is she?"

Adrian kept walking.

"Good afternoon to you too."

Martin ignored the remark.

"Adrian, we have a room ready."

"I'm going home."

"We need ten minutes."

"No."

Martin's expression sharpened.

"This is exactly what I mean."

Adrian stopped.

Noah shifted in the carrier.

Adrian placed one hand gently over the baby's back.

"What exactly do you mean?"

"Impulsiveness."

Adrian laughed softly.

"I told you three times I wasn't meeting."

Martin glanced toward the attorney.

"Thomas."

The man with the document case stepped forward.

Adrian raised a hand.

"Do not hand me anything while I'm holding my son."

Thomas stopped.

Eleanor's face softened when she saw Noah.

"Let me take him."

Adrian stepped back.

"No."

His mother looked stunned.

"I am his grandmother."

"I know."

"Then what is this?"

"A boundary."

Martin scoffed.

"Since when do you speak like a therapist?"

Adrian looked at Claire.

She shook her head immediately.

"Not me."

Vanessa almost laughed.

Martin's gaze snapped toward his daughter.

"You think this is funny?"

"No."

Vanessa stepped beside Adrian.

"I think the petition is unacceptable."

Martin stared.

"We discussed this."

"You discussed helping him."

"We discussed protecting Noah."

Vanessa's voice hardened.

"You used a medical letter Doctor Soren says he never wrote."

Martin's face changed for half a second.

Adrian saw it.

So did Claire.

Martin recovered quickly.

"I relied on information provided to counsel."

Doctor Soren stepped forward.

"Information that falsely used my name."

Martin looked at him.

"This can be clarified."

Adrian's voice was calm.

"Tomorrow."

Martin shook his head.

"Today."

"No."

Eleanor looked between them.

"Adrian, please."

He softened slightly.

"Mom, I am going home."

She looked at Noah.

"With him?"

Adrian stared at her.

Claire felt the cruelty of the question even if Eleanor had not intended it.

Adrian answered quietly.

"Especially with him."

Eleanor's eyes filled.

Martin stepped closer.

"You have been absent for months."

Adrian nodded.

"Yes."

"You left other people to raise him."

"Yes."

"You ignored your sister."

"Sometimes."

Martin seemed almost confused by the lack of denial.

Adrian continued.

"I was grieving badly."

Martin opened his mouth.

Adrian raised a hand.

"I was also his father."

The terminal went silent.

Adrian looked at the attorney.

"If you intend to file that petition, send it to my counsel."

Thomas glanced at Martin.

Adrian noticed.

"And do not take instructions from my father on my behalf again."

Martin's face darkened.

"You think one quiet flight makes you a parent?"

Adrian looked down at Noah.

"No."

He lifted his eyes.

"I think being his father makes me a parent."

Martin stepped closer.

Noah startled at the movement and began to cry.

Every face turned toward the baby.

For one terrible second, Claire feared Adrian would freeze.

He did not.

He moved away from the crowd.

He loosened the carrier slightly.

He touched the blue blanket near Noah's cheek.

He hummed the four notes.

Noah's crying slowed.

Martin watched.

Eleanor covered her mouth.

Vanessa looked down.

Adrian did not look at any of them until the baby settled.

Then he faced his father.

"You were saying?"

Martin had no answer.

The attorney lowered his document case.

Eleanor stepped toward Adrian more carefully.

"May I say hello to him?"

Adrian looked at her.

After a moment, he nodded.

"Yes."

She approached slowly.

Noah stared at her.

Eleanor smiled through tears.

"Hello, sweetheart."

The scene might have softened completely if Martin had remained quiet.

He did not.

"This changes nothing."

Adrian's expression closed.

Martin pointed toward Claire.

"A stranger coached you for one afternoon."

Claire felt every eye turn toward her.

Martin continued.

"She will disappear tonight."

Adrian looked at Claire.

Then back at his father.

"Maybe."

His voice was steady.

"But what she showed me stays."

Martin scoffed.

Adrian's phone buzzed.

A new message appeared from his attorney.

ADRIAN, DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING.

The second line made him stare.
