Chapter 8 - A Father at Thirty Thousand Feet.

Adrian's refusal did not bring peace.

It brought messages.

His phone vibrated again and again.

His father.

His mother.

The family attorney.

An assistant.

Another attorney.

Vanessa watched each notification appear.

"You should answer."

Adrian ignored the phone.

"You cannot simply refuse to discuss it."

"I can refuse to discuss it while holding my son on an airplane."

"They'll say you're avoiding the issue."

"Let them."

Vanessa looked toward Claire.

Claire offered no opinion.

She had seen families mistake urgency for authority.

Adrian did not need another person telling him what to decide.

He needed enough quiet to make the decision himself.

Noah slept for twenty minutes.

It was the longest stretch of calm since takeoff.

Adrian barely moved.

Claire returned to her seat but kept an eye on them.

She saw his expression every time he looked down.

Wonder.

Fear.

Grief.

Something like apology.

When Noah woke, Adrian did not reach for Vanessa.

He did not call the physician.

He did not ask Claire what to do.

He checked the diaper.

He adjusted the blanket.

He spoke softly.

"Hey, buddy."

Noah blinked at him.

Adrian smiled.

It was small and uncertain.

Noah stared at the gold chain against his father's chest.

His hand reached for it.

Adrian caught the tiny fingers.

"No."

Noah frowned.

Adrian laughed.

Claire smiled from her seat.

Vanessa noticed.

"You trained him in twenty minutes."

Claire shook her head.

"No."

"What would you call it?"

"Permission."

Vanessa looked confused.

"To do what?"

"To trust himself."

Vanessa's face tightened.

"That sounds nice."

Claire heard the resistance.

"It can also be uncomfortable."

"For whom?"

"For anyone who is used to being needed."

Vanessa looked at her sharply.

Claire returned to her folder.

She had said enough.

A few minutes later, the captain's voice came through the cabin.

A weather system near their destination had intensified.

The jet would circle temporarily, then possibly divert to a smaller airport.

Vanessa groaned.

Adrian looked at Noah.

The baby began fussing at the change in engine sound.

Doctor Soren stepped forward.

"Pressure changes may bother his ears."

Adrian nodded.

"What should I do?"

The doctor suggested feeding during descent if Noah would accept it.

Adrian looked toward Claire.

She held up both hands.

"That one came from him."

Doctor Soren almost smiled.

Adrian prepared the bottle.

Noah refused it.

Vanessa tensed.

Adrian did not.

He held Noah closer and hummed the four notes from Lena's recording.

The first attempt was off-key.

The second was worse.

Claire bit the inside of her cheek.

Vanessa covered a smile.

Adrian glanced at them.

"Neither of you heard that."

Noah stopped crying.

The entire row went still.

Adrian looked down.

The baby was listening.

Adrian hummed again.

Noah's eyes stayed on his father's face.

Vanessa whispered, "He knows it."

Adrian swallowed.

"Apparently."

The captain announced the diversion.

They would land forty minutes later than planned.

Adrian's phone rang again.

This time he answered.

His father's voice was loud.

"Do you understand what this delay does to the meeting?"

Adrian looked at Noah.

"Yes."

"Martin," Vanessa said.

Adrian raised one finger.

He wanted to handle it.

His father continued.

Claire heard the words "responsibility" and "pattern."

Adrian remained calm.

"Dad, Noah has been quiet for almost half an hour."

His father said something dismissive.

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"I am not asking for credit."

A pause.

"I am telling you that your assumptions are outdated."

Another pause.

"No."

The word had become easier.

"No, I will not sign anything at the airport."

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Adrian continued.

"If you want to speak to me, you can come to the house tomorrow."

His father raised his voice.

Adrian did not.

"And if you arrive with legal papers, you will not enter."

He ended the call.

Claire looked at him.

Adrian exhaled.

"Was that irrational?"

Claire smiled.

"It sounded clear."

Vanessa looked unsettled.

"He's going to be furious."

Adrian shrugged.

"He's been furious since I was twelve."

That sentence explained more than anyone expected.

Vanessa stared at her brother.

Adrian looked at her.

"What?"

She shook her head.

"I forgot."

"Forgot what?"

"How much you hate him deciding things for you."

Adrian gave a tired smile.

"I forgot too."

Noah began to fuss again.

Adrian checked his position.

He adjusted the blanket.

He hummed.

The baby settled.

Claire watched the father's shoulders loosen.

Then Doctor Soren sat across from Vanessa.

"There is something I should clarify before we land."

Vanessa's face went still.

The physician looked at Adrian.

"Your father asked me for a written assessment."

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"I never gave him one."

Vanessa stopped breathing.

Doctor Soren continued.

"But someone sent him a document using my name."

The cabin suddenly felt colder.

Adrian looked at Vanessa.

She shook her head before he even asked.

"It wasn't me."

Doctor Soren placed a tablet on the table.

On the screen was a letterhead bearing his clinic's logo.

At the bottom was a signature that looked almost real.

May you like

And in the middle was one sentence that changed everything.

MR. COLE IS CURRENTLY UNABLE TO PROVIDE CONSISTENT INDEPENDENT CARE FOR HIS INFANT SON.
