Chapter 9 - The Letter That Should Not Exist.

Adrian read the sentence twice.
Then a third time.
The anger did not arrive immediately.
First came disbelief.
Then humiliation.
Then a cold, frightening calm.
"Did you write this?"
Doctor Soren shook his head.
"No."
"Did anyone in your office?"
"Not with my authorization."
Vanessa leaned over the tablet.
"I've never seen that."
Adrian looked at her.
She met his gaze without flinching.
For the first time since the confrontation began, he believed her completely.
Doctor Soren scrolled down.
"The formatting is copied from an older evaluation template."
Claire stayed silent.
This had moved beyond a family argument.
Someone had taken a physician's professional identity and turned it into leverage.
Adrian looked at the date.
"Three weeks ago."
Vanessa's brows drew together.
"That's when Dad first told me he had medical concerns."
Adrian gave a humorless smile.
"Medical concerns."
Doctor Soren pointed to the footer.
"My office stopped using this address last year."
Vanessa looked sick.
"Martin wouldn't fake a medical letter."
Adrian looked at her.
"You sound like you're trying to convince yourself."
"He's controlling."
Her voice shook.
"He's not reckless."
Adrian looked down at Noah.
The baby slept through the adult panic.
Claire thought that was merciful.
Adrian handed the tablet back.
"Can you send me written confirmation that this is not yours?"
"Yes."
"Today."
"Immediately."
Adrian nodded.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
"Did Dad ever show you this?"
"No."
"He just summarized it?"
"Yes."
"What did he say?"
Vanessa searched her memory.
"He said Soren believed your grief was compromising judgment."
Doctor Soren shook his head.
"I never said that."
Vanessa's face crumpled slightly.
Claire realized the sister's certainty had been built on information she trusted because it came from her father.
Adrian saw it too.
He did not comfort her.
Not yet.
Vanessa whispered, "I believed him."
Adrian's voice was quiet.
"I know."
That was worse than anger.
Vanessa looked at Lena's old phone on the table.
"She warned me."
Adrian followed her gaze.
"About Dad?"
"About me."
Claire watched.
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
"She said I confuse helping with taking over."
Adrian almost smiled.
"That sounds like her."
"She said I make people smaller so I can feel useful."
Adrian looked away.
The truth of the sentence hurt both of them.
Vanessa continued.
"I thought she was being cruel."
"She was usually precise."
"That's not better."
"No."
A brief, sad laugh passed between them.
The captain announced twenty-five minutes to landing.
The pressure in the cabin shifted.
Noah stirred.
Adrian adjusted him without thinking.
Claire saw that automatic movement and realized the entire story had changed in less than two hours.
The man who had entered the flight believing he needed a room full of experts now responded to his son before anyone else moved.
Doctor Soren packed away the tablet.
"I will also contact your father directly."
Adrian stopped him.
"No."
The doctor raised an eyebrow.
"Send me the statement first."
"You intend to confront him?"
"I intend to give him a chance to explain."
Vanessa looked alarmed.
"At the airport?"
"No."
Adrian glanced at the messages on his phone.
"Apparently there will be plenty of people waiting there."
Claire closed her folder.
"Do you want advice?"
Adrian looked at her.
"Yes."
"Don't make the airport a courtroom."
Vanessa nodded immediately.
Claire continued.
"Take Noah home."
Adrian listened.
"Let everyone else wait."
A slow smile appeared.
Vanessa looked at Claire.
"That may be the first thing you've said all day that I completely agree with."
Claire smiled.
"Progress."
The mood softened for three seconds.
Then Adrian's phone vibrated with a new email.
He opened it.
His face changed.
Vanessa leaned closer.
"What?"
Adrian turned the screen.
The family attorney had attached a draft petition.
TEMPORARY GUARDIANSHIP OF NOAH COLE.
Claire felt her stomach tighten.
Vanessa read the first page.
Her hand flew to her mouth.
Adrian scrolled.
The petition cited the forged medical assessment.
It cited his work travel.
It cited testimony from household staff.
Then he reached the witness section.
Vanessa's name was listed.
Adrian looked at her.
She went white.
"I did not agree to that."
"Your name is here."
"I answered questions."
"What questions?"
Vanessa's breathing quickened.
"About the weeks after Lena died."
Adrian stared.
"You gave them a statement."
"I thought it was for family planning."
"You gave lawyers a statement about my grief."
"I didn't know."
The cabin seemed to tilt even though the jet was flying smoothly.
Adrian looked back at the petition.
Then at his sister.
"I need to know every single thing you told them."
Vanessa closed her eyes.
May you like
When she opened them, the confidence was gone.
"Then you're going to hate me before we land."
