Chapter 7 - The Voice She Left Behind.

Adrian did not touch the screen.

For several seconds he only stared at Lena's photograph.

Claire looked away to give him the dignity of privacy even inside a crowded cabin.

Vanessa did not.

Her face had changed completely.

The defensiveness was gone.

What remained was grief.

"I haven't seen that phone since the hospital," she whispered.

Adrian looked up.

"You had the bag."

"I didn't know it was there."

He studied her.

For once, Claire believed Vanessa immediately.

Adrian seemed to believe her too.

That made the discovery somehow harder.

The phone required a four-digit code.

Adrian entered one.

Wrong.

He tried another.

Wrong.

Vanessa swallowed.

"Her birthday?"

Adrian shook his head.

"She hated using birthdays."

He looked at Noah.

Then typed four numbers.

The phone unlocked.

Claire did not ask what the code meant.

Vanessa knew.

Her eyes filled.

"The day you met."

Adrian said nothing.

The saved draft opened.

It contained an audio file and a short line of text.

If you are hearing this, I got scared and wrote something dramatic.

Adrian gave a broken laugh.

That sounded so personal that Claire immediately stood.

"I'll go back to my seat."

Adrian looked at her.

"Stay."

Vanessa nodded this time.

Claire sat.

Adrian pressed play.

Lena's voice filled the cabin softly.

It was warm, amused, slightly breathless.

"Adrian, if you're listening to this without me standing next to you, please don't turn it into a tragedy before I finish."

Adrian closed his eyes.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

The recording continued.

"I know you think I am the natural parent and you are the terrified assistant."

A small laugh followed.

"You are wrong."

Adrian's grip tightened around Noah.

"You watch him when you think I'm asleep."

"You count his breaths."

"You check the room temperature three times."

"You pretend you don't know the lullaby, but I heard you humming it yesterday."

Claire looked at Adrian.

He was crying now.

Quietly.

No dramatic collapse.

Just tears he no longer bothered to hide.

Lena's voice continued.

"If anything ever happens to me, do not hand our son to everyone who sounds more confident than you."

Vanessa lowered her head.

Adrian opened his eyes.

"Ask for help when you need it."

"Listen to doctors."

"Listen to nurses."

"Listen to your sister, even when she is annoyingly certain."

Vanessa laughed through tears.

Then Lena's tone softened.

"But after you listen, remember that you are his father."

Adrian pressed his lips together.

"He does not need perfection."

"He needs the person who comes back when he cries."

Noah moved against his chest.

Adrian looked down.

The recording continued.

"When he is frightened, hold him close."

"When you are frightened, hold him close."

"Maybe the two of you can calm each other down."

Claire felt the line hit everyone in the cabin.

Even Doctor Soren had stopped pretending not to listen.

Lena's voice became quieter.

"And Vanessa, if you somehow stole this phone and are listening too, stop trying to organize everyone's feelings."

Vanessa let out a stunned sound that became laughter.

Claire smiled.

The recording ended with Lena humming four soft notes.

Noah's eyes opened.

His face turned toward the phone.

Adrian stared.

The baby knew the melody.

Claire could see it in the sudden stillness.

Adrian played the final seconds again.

Noah stopped fussing.

The entire cabin listened to a dead woman's four-note lullaby.

Adrian lowered his head until his forehead touched Noah's.

"I'm here."

His voice broke.

"I'm here."

Vanessa reached toward him.

Then stopped herself.

Adrian noticed.

After a moment, he shifted his free hand toward her.

She took it.

Claire looked away.

For one minute, the family became a family again.

Then Adrian's phone rang.

The name on the screen was MARTIN COLE.

His father.

Vanessa's hand went rigid.

Adrian watched the call for three rings.

Then he answered.

"Dad."

A man's voice came through the speaker, sharp enough that Claire could hear pieces of it.

"Landing."

"Counsel."

"Documents."

"Best for Noah."

Adrian's face changed.

He listened without interrupting.

Then he spoke.

"No."

Silence.

Adrian repeated it.

"No."

Vanessa looked at him.

His father said something Claire could not hear.

Adrian's expression became almost calm.

"You scheduled a guardianship meeting without asking me."

The voice rose.

Adrian lowered his.

"You will cancel it."

Another burst of angry speech.

Adrian looked at Noah.

"No."

He ended the call.

Vanessa stared at him.

"You just hung up on Dad."

Adrian placed the phone facedown.

"Yes."

"What are you going to do when we land?"

Adrian looked at the blue blanket, Lena's old phone, and the sleeping child against his chest.

May you like

Then he looked at Claire.

"I think I'm going to learn whether my family understands the word no."
