Chapter 3 - What Everyone Had Missed.

Vanessa withdrew her hand slowly.

"I was only fixing the blanket."

Adrian's expression stayed hard.

"He was calm."

"For five seconds."

"He was calm."

The difference between those sentences mattered.

Claire heard it.

So did Vanessa.

Adrian had spent the last hour being told what was wrong.

Now he had experienced one thing that worked, however briefly, and he was suddenly unwilling to let anyone dismiss it.

Claire stayed quiet.

This was no longer the moment to prove expertise.

It was the moment to let a father notice his own child.

Noah cried again, but the sound was different now.

Less frantic.

More tired.

Adrian adjusted his hold exactly the way Claire had shown him.

His movements were awkward, but gentler.

"Like this?"

Claire nodded.

"Keep his cheek against you."

Adrian lowered his chin.

Noah's tiny hand curled into the open edge of the black shirt.

Claire saw Adrian notice it.

His face changed.

"My wife used to say he grabbed her shirt when he was tired."

Vanessa looked away.

Claire said nothing.

Adrian's breathing slowed.

Noah's crying softened again.

The physician moved forward with his stethoscope.

Claire raised a hand.

"Give him a minute."

The physician looked offended.

Adrian surprised everyone.

"Give him a minute."

The doctor stopped.

Vanessa sat back.

The hierarchy inside the jet had shifted by one quiet inch.

Claire could feel it.

Adrian could too.

He looked at her.

"Now answer the question."

"What question?"

"You know what question."

Claire did.

She also knew Vanessa was watching her with a mixture of suspicion and judgment.

Claire kept her voice professional.

"You asked if I could breastfeed him."

Adrian's ears reddened slightly.

"I asked because you said warmth."

"And I told you warmth was the first issue I saw."

"So you didn't mean that."

"Not first."

Vanessa laughed without humor.

"This is unbelievable."

Claire turned toward her.

"It is not unusual for a distressed baby to seek familiar forms of comfort."

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"And you think you can provide that?"

Claire refused the bait.

"I think his father can provide much more of it than anyone has allowed him to believe."

Adrian looked at Vanessa.

The sentence hit harder than Claire intended.

Vanessa's posture stiffened.

"What exactly is that supposed to mean?"

Claire realized she had stepped into family territory.

"It means he responded to Adrian."

Vanessa's voice cooled.

"He responds to anyone for a few seconds."

Adrian stared at her.

"Do you hear yourself?"

"I'm trying to be realistic."

"About my son?"

"About the situation."

Claire looked between them.

This was not a new argument.

It had simply found a new setting.

Adrian stood carefully with Noah against his chest.

The movement made Vanessa rise too.

"Sit down," she said.

Adrian ignored her.

He began walking slowly along the aisle.

Noah fussed, then settled again.

Claire smiled despite herself.

Adrian noticed.

"Don't look so surprised."

"I'm not."

"You are."

"I'm relieved."

He took another step.

Noah's breathing became less ragged.

Adrian looked down at him as if he were learning his son's face for the first time.

Then Noah turned his head, mouth searching at the open collar of Adrian's shirt.

Adrian stopped.

His eyes lifted to Claire.

"That's what you saw."

"Yes."

"He thinks I'm his mother?"

"No."

Claire answered immediately.

"He knows you're not."

The words struck him.

Claire softened her tone.

"He is looking for comfort associated with feeding and closeness."

Adrian glanced toward the bottle.

"Then maybe he is hungry."

"Maybe."

"That's not very certain for an expert."

Claire almost smiled.

"Good experts are comfortable saying maybe."

The physician coughed.

Vanessa looked annoyed.

Claire continued.

"If he continues showing hunger cues, feeding may help."

Adrian hesitated.

"And if he won't take the bottle?"

Claire could feel the question returning.

This time it carried less shock and more desperation.

She answered carefully.

"I'm currently nursing my own eight-month-old daughter."

Adrian went still.

Vanessa's mouth fell open.

Claire continued before assumptions filled the silence.

"I also pump when I travel."

The physician's eyebrows rose.

Claire added, "But using another person's milk or direct nursing is a decision that requires informed consent, hygiene, and medical judgment."

Adrian nodded slowly.

"So you're saying it is possible."

"I'm saying there are options."

Vanessa stepped between them.

"No."

Adrian looked at her.

Vanessa's voice sharpened.

"No stranger is feeding Lena's baby."

The cabin went silent.

Claire saw Adrian's face change at the phrase.

Not Noah.

Not Adrian's son.

Lena's baby.

Adrian looked at Vanessa for a long moment.

Then he asked a question so quietly that Claire almost missed it.

"Is that what you think he is?"

Vanessa blinked.

"What?"

"Lena's baby."

"Adrian, I didn't mean—"

"You never call him my son."

Vanessa's confidence faltered.

Claire wished she could disappear from the aisle.

But Adrian was no longer looking at her.

He was looking at his sister as if a door had opened inside a room he had avoided for months.

"Why?"

May you like

Vanessa's answer did not come.

And the silence that followed made Noah's next cry sound almost small.
