Chapter 1 - The Floor That Shouldn't Open.

Adrian Vale knew every sound in his family villa, but the small voice in the marble foyer did not belong there.

He had returned just after sunset expecting a quiet house, a late dinner, and another argument with his aunt about the family foundation.

Instead, a blonde little girl in a pink dress stood beneath the chandelier clutching a white stuffed rabbit with both hands.

Two of Adrian's bodyguards, Cole Mercer and Jonah Reid, remained near the staircase because neither man understood how the child had slipped past the front security desk.

Adrian lowered himself to one knee.

"What's your name?"

"Sophie."

Her voice was steady, but her eyes were not.

She looked toward the polished floor beside the grand staircase.

"My mom is in there."

Adrian followed her finger and saw nothing except white marble cut into perfect geometric panels.

Then Sophie stepped forward and pressed the toe of her shoe against a narrow brass line almost invisible between two tiles.

A hidden latch clicked.

The sound was so small that it made the entire foyer feel suddenly enormous.

Adrian stared at the seam.

He had grown up in this house.

He had raced across this floor as a child, attended family Christmas dinners under this chandelier, and stood in this very spot during his father's memorial.

He had never known there was a door beneath it.

Cole moved first and pulled a thin metal tool from his jacket.

Together, he and Adrian lifted the concealed panel.

Cold air rose from below.

The upper foyer was bright with chandelier light, but beneath the opening was a deep shaft of darkness with a narrow service ladder attached to one wall.

Adrian leaned over the edge.

"Hello?"

For a moment, nothing answered.

Then a woman's face appeared far below in a weak circle of light.

Her blonde hair was tangled, her white blouse was dusty, and there was a small dark scrape along her forehead.

She looked up as if she did not believe the opening was real.

"Help me."

Sophie dropped the rabbit and rushed toward the opening.

Jonah caught her gently before she reached the edge.

"Mom!"

The woman below covered her mouth.

"Sophie?"

Adrian's shock turned so quickly into anger that Cole noticed before anyone else did.

"Who put you down there?"

The woman tried to answer, but her voice broke.

"Please get me out first."

Adrian stood.

His eyes moved from the open floor to the front doors, the staircase, the security cameras, and finally the two men who had guarded him for years.

"Seal every exit."

Jonah straightened.

"Sir?"

"No one leaves this villa."

His voice was low now.

That made it more serious.

"Not staff."

"Not guests."

"Not family."

"Nobody."

Cole immediately touched the radio at his cuff.

"North gate, lock down."

Jonah did the same.

"Garage team, close both doors and hold every vehicle."

Somewhere deeper in the villa, electronic locks began clicking into place.

Adrian took off his jacket and handed it to Sophie.

"Stay with Jonah."

She shook her head.

"I want my mom."

"And you're going to have her."

He looked at Cole.

"Harness."

Cole disappeared toward the security cabinet hidden behind the staircase panel.

Adrian knelt again and called down.

"What's your name?"

"Claire Bennett."

The name struck something in his memory.

He had seen it earlier that week on a meeting schedule his aunt had canceled without explanation.

Claire Bennett had been listed as an independent financial consultant.

Adrian had never met her.

"Claire, how long have you been down there?"

She lifted her face.

"Long enough to know this wasn't an accident."

A door opened on the upper landing.

Adrian looked up.

His aunt Celeste stood at the railing in a silk evening robe, one hand resting on the carved banister.

Her expression was perfect surprise.

Too perfect.

"Adrian?"

Her gaze dropped toward the open floor.

For one fraction of a second, all the color left her face.

Then it returned.

"What on earth is happening?"

Sophie turned and pointed at her.

Claire screamed from below.

"Don't let her take Sophie!"

The foyer went silent.

Celeste's hand tightened on the railing.

Adrian looked from Claire to Sophie, then back to his aunt.

"Cole."

Cole had just returned carrying a safety harness.

"Yes, sir."

Adrian never took his eyes off Celeste.

"Nobody leaves."

May you like

He paused.

"Especially not her."
