Chapter 11 - Sophie's Recording.

Adrian did not answer the message.

He showed it to Cole, Nolan, and Claire instead.

"They want the letter."

Claire looked at the sealed envelope in Jonah's hand.

"Which means they don't know what's inside."

Nolan nodded.

"Or they know exactly what's inside and need the original destroyed."

Adrian took the envelope and held it against the light.

The paper was thick enough that nothing showed through.

His father's handwriting crossed the front in dark blue ink.

ADRIAN - READ THIS ONLY WHEN THE HOUSE STOPS FEELING SAFE.

He had missed that smaller line before.

Claire read it over his shoulder.

"He knew."

"He suspected."

"That's close enough."

Adrian looked at Cole.

"Can the sender track my phone?"

"Assume yes."

"Good."

Cole understood immediately.

"You want them to think you're going alone."

"Exactly."

Claire shook her head.

"That's what people say right before a plan becomes a disaster."

Adrian almost smiled despite the situation.

"Then help me make it less stupid."

Before Claire could answer, Sophie spoke from the stair.

"My bunny talks."

Everyone looked at her.

The transmitter had been removed from the stuffed rabbit, but Cole had left the toy itself beside Sophie.

She pressed one paw.

A tiny electronic sound came from inside.

Claire frowned.

"That's not part of the toy."

Cole took it back and opened another seam beneath the fabric.

There was a second device inside.

This one was not a transmitter.

It was a memory module with a tiny microphone.

Nolan stared at it.

"Local recorder."

Adrian looked at Sophie.

"How long have you had the rabbit?"

"Mom gave it to me yesterday."

Claire's face changed.

"I didn't put that inside."

Sophie tilted her head.

"The gray-haired man fixed it when the ear fell off."

Nolan stepped closer.

"The man who gave you the key?"

Sophie nodded.

Cole connected the memory module to an offline reader.

The first files were ordinary.

Sophie humming.

Claire telling her to finish a sandwich.

Footsteps.

A door closing.

Then Celeste's voice appeared.

"Keep the child upstairs."

Victor answered.

"The child doesn't matter."

Celeste's voice sharpened.

"She matters if Claire refuses to sign."

Claire covered Sophie's ears, but Sophie gently pulled her mother's hands away.

"I heard this already."

Claire looked devastated by that answer.

Adrian stared at the waveform.

Victor spoke again.

"Miriam has the original letter."

Celeste answered.

"Then get it from her."

"And Adrian?"

"By morning, the board will believe he ordered the entire thing."

A third voice entered.

Male.

Older.

"You're both making the same mistake Daniel warned me about."

Nolan froze.

His face drained of color.

"Play that again."

Cole replayed the line.

Nolan stepped backward as though the room had lost its balance.

"That's my father."

Adrian stared at him.

"Nathan?"

Nolan nodded slowly.

The recording continued.

Victor's voice became sharp.

"You should have stayed gone."

Nathan answered calmly.

"You should have stopped stealing."

There was movement.

A chair scraped.

Celeste said something too softly to understand.

Then Nathan's voice came closer to the microphone.

"Sophie, if you can hear me, take the silver key and hide where I showed you."

The file ended.

Claire sat down hard in the nearest chair.

"He knew Sophie was listening."

Nolan looked at his father’s old recorder in one hand and the new recording in the other.

Five years of unanswered questions had suddenly become a voice in the room.

"He's alive."

Adrian looked toward the hidden passage.

"And he was here yesterday."

The message on Adrian's phone changed.

The first text disappeared.

A new one replaced it.

DO NOT BRING COLE.

Cole gave a short laugh.

"That's personal."

Another message appeared.

DO NOT BRING NOLAN.

Nolan's expression hardened.

Then a third.

CLAIRE STAYS WITH SOPHIE.

Adrian looked around the room.

"Whoever is sending these knows exactly where everyone is."

Cole glanced toward the ceiling.

"Not through the cameras."

Claire looked down at the rabbit.

"Through devices we haven't found."

Sophie raised her hand as if she were in school.

"I know where the gray-haired man went."

Nolan knelt instantly.

"Where?"

She pointed toward the old portrait of Daniel Vale at the end of the underground archive.

"Behind Grandpa's picture."

Adrian looked at Claire.

"Grandpa?"

Claire stared at her daughter.

"Sophie, why did you call him that?"

Sophie blinked.

"Because the gray-haired man said that's who he was."

No one moved.

Claire turned toward Daniel Vale's portrait.

Her face went white.

Adrian heard the sentence again in his mind.

Grandpa's picture.

He looked at Claire.

"What haven't you told me?"

May you like

Claire's lips parted, but before she could answer, the portrait swung away from the wall by itself.

A narrow doorway opened behind it.
