Chapter 2 - No One Leaves the Villa.

The first person Claire asked for after Cole brought her out of the hidden shaft was Sophie.
She did not ask for water.
She did not ask for a doctor.
She did not ask Adrian what would happen next.
She dropped to her knees on the marble floor and pulled her daughter against her chest.
Sophie buried her face against Claire's shoulder.
"I did what you told me."
Claire closed her eyes.
"You did exactly right."
Adrian stood several feet away and watched the reunion with a pressure building behind his ribs.
He had spent his adult life believing the villa was the one place he controlled.
Now he understood that someone had built a prison beneath his feet and used it without his knowledge.
Celeste came down the staircase slowly.
She had changed from surprise to indignation.
"This is absurd."
Adrian turned toward her.
"What's absurd?"
"Locking the house because a stranger appears in a service chamber."
Claire looked up sharply.
"You know my name."
Celeste stopped.
"What?"
"You called me a stranger, but you know exactly who I am."
Celeste gave a small, controlled laugh.
"Your name was on the visitor schedule."
Adrian's expression did not change.
"The schedule you canceled."
Celeste looked at him.
"Because there was no reason for you to meet with her."
Claire stood, still holding Sophie's hand.
"That's not why you canceled it."
Jonah stepped closer, ready without being obvious.
Adrian noticed everything now.
Every pause.
Every glance.
Every choice of word.
"Claire, tell me what happened."
She looked toward the ceiling camera above the staircase.
"Not here."
Adrian followed her gaze.
"Why?"
Claire lowered her voice.
"Because whoever put me down there knew exactly where the cameras couldn't see."
Adrian immediately looked at Cole.
"Security room."
Cole nodded.
"Already on it."
"Take Jonah."
Claire tightened her grip on Sophie's hand.
"No."
Everyone turned toward her.
"Don't send both of them away."
Adrian studied her.
"Why?"
"Because one of the people who brought me downstairs wore a security earpiece."
Jonah's face hardened.
Cole said nothing.
Celeste folded her arms.
"You expect us to believe you could identify an earpiece in the dark?"
Claire looked directly at her.
"The room wasn't dark when they put me there."
That sentence changed the atmosphere again.
Adrian glanced toward the hidden opening.
"There are lights below?"
"There were."
"And now?"
"Someone cut them."
Cole crouched beside the open hatch and shined his flashlight down.
"There's wiring on the west wall."
Adrian pointed toward the sitting room.
"Claire and Sophie stay there with Jonah."
He looked at Celeste.
"You stay here."
Celeste's eyes flashed.
"You don't give me orders in my own home."
"It isn't your home."
The answer came faster than Adrian intended.
Celeste stared at him.
His father had left the villa to Adrian five years earlier, but Celeste had continued living there as though the paperwork were a temporary inconvenience.
For the first time, Adrian understood how much he had allowed because confrontation seemed unnecessary.
Tonight, that habit ended.
Cole returned from the security room six minutes later carrying a tablet.
"We have a problem."
Adrian took it.
The screen displayed a timeline of camera feeds.
At 7:42 p.m., every camera on the foyer level had frozen.
At 8:00 p.m., they resumed.
Eighteen minutes were missing.
"System failure?"
Cole shook his head.
"No."
"Manual override?"
"Yes."
Adrian looked toward the camera above the stairs.
"Who has authority?"
Cole's jaw tightened.
"You."
"Who else?"
"Head of security."
Adrian already knew the name.
"Nolan Price."
Cole nodded.
"And one temporary emergency credential."
"Assigned to whom?"
Cole swiped to the next screen.
For the first time that night, he looked genuinely unsettled.
"That's the problem."
Adrian read the credential name.
ADRIAN VALE.
He looked up slowly.
"I didn't authorize anything."
Claire appeared in the sitting-room doorway.
"That's exactly what they want you to say."
Celeste turned toward her.
"Enough."
Claire ignored her.
"They didn't just hide me."
She looked at Adrian.
"They're building a story around you."
Adrian lowered the tablet.
"What story?"
Claire took a breath.
May you like
"That you ordered everything."
Then every light in the villa went out.
