Chapter 12 - The Locked Study.

The doorway behind Daniel Vale's portrait revealed a staircase leading upward.
Not down.
Adrian stared into the passage.
"Where does it go?"
Miriam Cross answered from the darkness.
"To your father's study."
She stepped into the archive carrying an old-fashioned lantern.
Her silver-gray hair was loose around her shoulders, and dust covered the sleeves of her black house uniform.
Nolan immediately raised his head.
"Miriam."
Claire moved in front of Sophie.
Cole watched the house manager's hands.
Adrian's voice was flat.
"You sent the text."
Miriam nodded.
"I did."
"You threatened yourself."
"I needed whoever was monitoring your phone to believe I was being held."
"Why?"
"Because they have been looking for me since yesterday."
Adrian held up the sealed letter.
"And this?"
Miriam's eyes rested on the envelope.
"That is one of three originals."
Claire frowned.
"Three?"
"Daniel never trusted a single copy of anything important."
Adrian looked at the hidden passage.
"You knew about all of this."
"Yes."
"The underground room?"
Miriam hesitated.
"Yes."
Anger moved through Adrian again.
"A woman was locked in it."
"Not by me."
"But you knew the room existed."
"Your father built it as a document vault."
Miriam's voice shook for the first time.
"It was never supposed to hold a person."
Claire looked toward the chamber where she had been trapped.
"Then why is there a cot?"
Miriam closed her eyes.
"Because Nathan stayed there during the investigation when he believed someone was following him."
Nolan stepped forward.
"My father lived under this house?"
"For eleven days."
"And you never told me?"
"He made me promise."
Nolan's expression sharpened.
"He disappeared for five years."
"To keep you alive."
The answer silenced him.
Miriam looked at Adrian.
"We do not have much time."
"The board meeting begins in less than six hours."
"Victor has enough forged records to make you look unstable, reckless, and dishonest."
Adrian gestured toward the archive.
"Then we have the originals."
"Not all of them."
Miriam turned toward the hidden stairs.
"The final ledger is in your father's study."
Adrian frowned.
"I searched that room after he died."
"You searched the room you could see."
They climbed the hidden staircase one at a time.
It ended behind a bookcase in Daniel's old study.
The room had been locked since the funeral except for occasional cleaning.
Adrian rarely entered.
The smell of leather and cedar was exactly as he remembered.
Miriam crossed to the fireplace.
She pressed a carved wooden rose in the mantel.
A narrow compartment opened.
Inside sat a red ledger and a second sealed envelope.
Claire whispered.
"What's in the ledger?"
Miriam answered without touching it.
"The real ownership history of Vale Holdings."
Adrian laughed once in disbelief.
"Ownership isn't a secret."
Miriam looked at him with unmistakable sadness.
"Some of it is."
Adrian's face hardened.
"Stop speaking in riddles."
Miriam took a breath.
"Your father changed the succession plan before he died."
"To whom?"
Miriam looked at Claire.
Claire stepped backward.
"No."
Adrian turned toward her.
"You know."
"I suspected something."
"Since when?"
"Since I received the package five years ago."
"And you said nothing."
"Because I didn't know if it was real."
Sophie tugged Claire's sleeve.
"Mom, is this about Grandpa?"
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
Adrian stared at her.
"Why does she call my father Grandpa?"
Claire struggled to answer.
A floorboard creaked in the hallway outside.
Cole lifted one hand.
Everyone went silent.
Another creak.
Then Victor Lang's voice came through the locked study door.
"Miriam, I know you're in there."
Miriam whispered.
"He found us faster than I expected."
Victor knocked once.
"Adrian, open the door."
Adrian did not move.
"Why would I do that?"
Victor's tone changed.
"Because Celeste is with me."
A woman's voice followed.
"Adrian, please."
Celeste sounded frightened.
For the first time all night, it did not sound rehearsed.
Victor continued.
"And because the board meeting has been moved forward."
Adrian checked his phone.
The calendar updated.
3:30 A.M.
Twenty-two minutes away.
Victor spoke through the door.
"You can keep chasing ghosts in your father's house."
"Or you can open the door and save your company."
Miriam quietly opened the red ledger.
A photograph slipped from between the pages and landed face-up on the desk.
It showed Daniel Vale twenty-seven years earlier holding a newborn blonde baby.
