Chapter 7 - The Guest Who Wasn't Invited.

Sophie noticed the red light before anyone else.
"My bunny is awake."
Claire turned.
Adrian took the rabbit carefully from the little girl's hands.
The toy looked ordinary except for the faint red glow behind its left eye.
Cole opened the seam along the back with a pocket tool.
Inside was a transmitter smaller than a coin.
Claire went pale.
"That wasn't there before."
Sophie looked worried.
"Did I do something bad?"
Claire immediately knelt beside her.
"No."
"You did nothing wrong."
"Someone else did."
Adrian handed the device to Cole.
"Can it send audio?"
"Audio and low-resolution video."
"Range?"
"Inside the property, easily."
Nolan studied the casing.
"Security contractors use these for covert monitoring."
Claire looked at him.
"Your contractors?"
"Not mine."
Nolan turned the device over.
"But I know who supplied this model."
"Who?"
"Lang Protective Services."
The name hit the room like a door slamming shut.
Victor Lang did not merely advise the family legally.
His brother owned one of the companies paid by the Vale Foundation.
Adrian remembered Claire's folder.
Security contracts that never existed.
He understood the shape of the fraud now.
"Victor moved foundation money through his brother's company."
Claire nodded.
"That's one of the routes."
"And when my father found out?"
"He started collecting evidence."
"Then why didn't he remove Victor?"
Claire looked at Adrian for a long moment.
"Because Victor knew something your father didn't want public."
Adrian's expression hardened.
"What?"
Claire looked toward Sophie.
"Not yet."
Before Adrian could press her, the front intercom chimed.
Everyone turned.
The villa was under lockdown.
Nobody should have been able to reach the front gate, much less trigger the private entrance channel.
Jonah crossed to the control panel.
A man's face appeared on the screen.
Silver hair.
Navy overcoat.
Gold watch.
Victor Lang.
He stood outside the locked front doors as calmly as if arriving for dinner.
"Adrian."
His voice came through the speaker.
"I believe we need to talk."
Adrian stared at the screen.
"How did you get inside the outer gate?"
Victor smiled slightly.
"I've had access to this property longer than you have."
Cole muttered under his breath.
"That isn't an answer."
Victor continued.
"Celeste called me."
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
"Where is she?"
"Safe."
"That word means very little tonight."
Victor looked directly into the camera.
"Neither does loyalty, apparently."
Nolan stepped toward the intercom.
"You revoked my access."
Victor's smile disappeared.
"You abandoned a lawful instruction."
"There was nothing lawful about locking Claire underground."
Victor's eyes shifted.
He had not expected Nolan to be standing there.
Adrian saw it.
"Open the outer vestibule only," Adrian told Jonah.
Claire grabbed his arm.
"What are you doing?"
"Letting him talk."
"He may be the person who put me down there."
"Which is exactly why I want him where I can see him."
Cole moved to Adrian's left.
Jonah opened only the first security door.
Victor entered the glass vestibule between the exterior and interior doors.
He was effectively inside a transparent box.
Adrian approached without opening the second door.
"Start talking."
Victor placed both hands in his coat pockets.
"Your father made a mess."
Adrian's face tightened.
"Careful."
"He tried to correct it too late."
"The foundation was bleeding money."
"He knew it."
"I knew it."
"Celeste knew it."
Adrian stepped closer to the glass.
"And Claire?"
Victor looked past him at her.
"Claire was supposed to sign a confidentiality settlement."
Claire stared at him.
"You mean a transfer agreement."
"One document among several."
"You had me taken below the house."
Victor's expression did not move.
"I told Celeste to keep you somewhere private until we could finish the discussion."
Nolan's voice was cold.
"You said she didn't need to be comfortable."
Victor turned toward him.
"A poor choice of words."
Adrian felt rage rise again.
He did not let it control his voice.
"Where is Celeste?"
Victor sighed.
"She is frightened."
"Where?"
"I don't know."
"You just said she was safe."
"I assume she is."
Adrian glanced at Cole.
Cole understood and quietly began tracing the intercom access record.
Victor leaned closer to the glass.
"You have a board meeting tomorrow morning."
"Cancel it."
"Why?"
"Because if you appear, you will lose control of Vale Holdings before lunch."
Claire stepped forward.
"That's what this was always about."
Victor ignored her.
"The board has documents showing that you secretly authorized the security shutdown, the transfer agreement, and payments connected to Claire Bennett."
Adrian's stomach turned.
"Payments to Claire?"
Claire looked stunned.
Victor nodded.
"Two million dollars routed from your private account yesterday."
"That never happened."
"The bank says otherwise."
Victor removed one hand from his pocket and held up a printed statement against the glass.
Adrian could see his own account number.
Claire could see her own name.
Then Sophie spoke from behind them.
"That's the man."
Every head turned.
Victor froze.
Sophie pointed directly at him.
May you like
"He's the one who told Aunt Pretty where Mom hid the blue folder."
Victor's calm expression finally broke.
