Chapter 10 - The Man Who Signed Everything.

Adrian listened to Nathan Price's recording in complete silence.

The message had been made five years earlier.

At that time, Adrian's office had belonged to his father.

That changed the meaning instantly.

Claire understood first.

"He didn't mean your office."

Adrian nodded.

"He meant my father's."

Nolan took the recorder carefully.

His face remained controlled, but his hands were not.

"Keep playing."

The next section was damaged by static.

Nathan's voice returned in fragments.

"Accounts... forged authority... someone close enough... signature access..."

Then a clearer sentence emerged.

"He signs what they put in front of him because he trusts the people in the room."

Adrian looked at Claire.

"My father."

"Probably."

The recording continued.

"If I fail to meet Daniel tomorrow, the blue file goes to Claire Bennett."

Adrian's heart seemed to stop.

"Daniel was my father."

Claire stared at the recorder.

"I never met Nathan Price."

Nolan looked at her.

"He knew your name."

Claire sat slowly in one of the archive chairs.

"My firm received an anonymous package five years ago."

"It contained partial foundation records and a request to keep them sealed unless someone contacted me with a specific phrase."

Adrian frowned.

"What phrase?"

Claire looked directly at him.

"The floor remembers what the family forgets."

Adrian felt cold despite the underground air.

"Who used it?"

"Your father."

"When?"

"Three weeks before he died."

Nolan pressed stop.

"Then Nathan gave your father the same backup plan he gave Claire."

Adrian looked at the black binders.

"And someone interrupted it."

Claire nodded.

Adrian thought about his father's final months.

Daniel Vale had become distracted and private.

He signed documents late at night.

He canceled trips.

He stopped discussing foundation business at dinner.

At the time, Adrian believed grief over his mother's death had changed him.

Now every memory looked different.

"Victor handled his paperwork."

Claire said nothing.

"Celeste managed the foundation calendar."

Still nothing.

"Who controlled access to his office?"

Nolan answered.

"Miriam Cross."

Adrian looked up sharply.

Miriam had been house manager for sixteen years.

She knew every room, every key, every schedule, and every person who entered the villa.

She had also been absent since Adrian arrived tonight.

"Where is Miriam?"

Cole checked his offline staff list.

"Her shift began at noon."

"Did she sign out?"

"No."

"Has anyone seen her?"

Jonah shook his head.

"Not since the lockdown."

Adrian touched his radio.

"All teams, locate Miriam Cross."

No one answered for several seconds.

Then a guard from the north wing replied.

"Sir, we found her phone."

"Where?"

"In the greenhouse."

"And Miriam?"

"No sign of her."

Adrian looked at Claire.

"Another missing person."

Claire's expression tightened.

"Or another person moving through passages."

Cole opened one of the later ledgers.

"There's something else."

He pointed to a list of authorization initials.

D.V. appeared beside hundreds of transactions.

Daniel Vale.

Some were legitimate foundation grants.

Others were the suspicious transfers Claire had identified.

Adrian ran his finger down the page.

"My father signed everything."

Claire leaned closer.

"Maybe not."

"Those are his initials."

"Look at the pressure."

She placed two pages side by side.

The legitimate signatures were uneven and slightly angled.

The suspicious ones were nearly identical.

"They're reproductions."

Adrian thought of his own perfect digital signature on the transfer agreement.

"Same method."

"Yes."

Nolan looked at the archive shelves.

"Someone has been doing this for years."

A soft chime came from Adrian's phone.

No one should have been able to contact him through the isolated network.

A calendar reminder had appeared.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS - 9:00 A.M.

Attached to it was a new document.

Adrian opened the file.

It was a board resolution declaring him temporarily incapable of managing Vale Holdings due to dangerous conduct and financial misconduct.

The supporting evidence included the forged transfer, the fake payment to Claire, and footage from the villa.

At the bottom were seven board signatures.

Six were already signed.

The seventh line belonged to Victor Lang as corporate counsel.

Claire read the final paragraph.

"If this passes, Celeste becomes interim chair."

Adrian shook his head.

"That's what Victor wants me to believe."

"Why?"

He looked at Nathan Price's recorder.

"Because Nathan told us Victor isn't in charge."

A second notification appeared.

This one was a text from an unknown number.

COME TO YOUR FATHER'S STUDY ALONE IF YOU WANT MIRIAM ALIVE.

Adrian stared at it.

May you like

Then another message arrived.

BRING THE SEALED LETTER.
