Chapter 13 - The Person Behind the Voice.

Adrian read the words twice.

Then a third time.

Claire did not reach for the photograph.

She looked as if touching it might make the truth permanent.

Sophie stood beside her, too young to understand why every adult in the room had gone silent.

Adrian finally looked up.

"You're my sister."

Claire shook her head immediately.

"I don't know that."

Adrian held up the photograph.

"My father wrote it."

"That doesn't make it true."

Miriam spoke softly.

"It is true."

Claire turned toward her.

"How would you know?"

"Because I was there when Daniel learned."

Claire's eyes narrowed.

"Who was my mother?"

Miriam glanced at Sophie.

"That story belongs to you, not to this room."

Claire stepped closer.

"I've spent thirty-three years without that story."

"Then you deserve it when you can hear it without Victor Lang trying to break down the door."

The reminder pulled everyone back to the present.

Victor knocked again.

"Nineteen minutes, Adrian."

Cole checked the hallway through a narrow security mirror built into the doorframe.

"Victor and Celeste are alone."

Nolan frowned.

"No security team?"

"None visible."

Adrian looked at Miriam.

"Where is Nathan Price?"

Miriam's gaze moved toward the bookcase.

A voice came from behind it.

"Closer than my son would like."

Nolan turned so fast he struck the desk with his hip.

An older man stepped from the hidden passage.

He was thinner than Nolan remembered, with gray hair and deep lines around his eyes.

But the resemblance was unmistakable.

Nolan did not speak.

Nathan Price looked at his son.

"Hello, Nolan."

Nolan's anger arrived before relief.

"Five years."

Nathan nodded.

"I know."

"You let me think you were dead."

"I know."

"You don't get to say that like it fixes anything."

"It doesn't."

Nolan looked away because his eyes had become wet.

Adrian gave them only a few seconds.

"Nathan, who is running this?"

Nathan looked toward the red ledger.

"The current operation?"

"Victor designed most of it."

"Celeste financed pieces of it and gave him family access."

Adrian frowned.

"Your recording said neither was in charge."

"Five years ago, they weren't."

"Who was?"

Nathan looked at Miriam.

"Daniel."

Adrian's expression hardened.

"My father was stealing from his own foundation?"

"No."

Nathan shook his head.

"He was moving money into controlled accounts so Victor would expose the routes he was using."

Claire understood.

"A financial trap."

"Exactly."

"The suspicious payments to N. Price were investigation funds."

Nathan nodded.

"Every one of them."

Adrian looked at the photograph again.

"And Claire?"

Nathan's voice softened.

"Daniel discovered he had a daughter from a relationship before he married your mother."

"Claire's mother never told him."

"By the time he learned the truth, Claire was an adult and wanted nothing from the Vale family."

Claire stared at Nathan.

"I never said that."

"Your mother did."

Claire's face changed.

"You knew her?"

"I found her for Daniel."

Claire pressed her lips together.

Nathan continued.

"Daniel respected her wishes for years."

"Then he learned Victor and Celeste were draining the foundation."

"He changed his estate plan because he wanted two people with equal authority over the family assets."

Adrian looked at Claire.

"Us."

"Yes."

Miriam opened the red ledger to the final pages.

"But the amendment was never announced."

"Why?"

"Because Daniel died before the scheduled signing meeting."

Victor's voice came through the door again.

"Fifteen minutes."

Nathan moved toward the desk.

"Victor later found a draft."

"He realized Claire could become a co-trustee if the dormant trust activated."

Claire frowned.

"What dormant trust?"

Nathan looked at Sophie.

"The one tied to your daughter's sixth birthday."

Claire froze.

"Sophie's birthday was yesterday."

"Exactly."

Adrian understood why the crisis had exploded now.

The transfer to Claire's account.

The sudden meeting.

The forged documents.

The attempt to force her signature.

Everything began when a legal mechanism Daniel created years ago automatically activated.

"The two million dollars wasn't fake."

Claire looked at him.

Nathan shook his head.

"No."

"It was the first distribution from Daniel's family trust."

"Victor changed the description so it looked like Adrian paid Claire personally."

Cole checked the time.

"Twelve minutes."

Adrian looked at the sealed envelope.

"What happens if the board votes?"

Miriam answered.

"If they accept Victor's documents, they can suspend you temporarily."

"And if Claire's status is proven first?"

Nathan smiled faintly.

"Then Victor has a bigger problem."

"Why?"

"Because the board cannot transfer controlling authority while both co-trustees object."

Claire stared at him.

"I'm not a co-trustee yet."

Nathan pointed to the envelope.

"That depends on what Daniel wrote."

Adrian began opening it.

A loud crack sounded from the study door.

The lock shifted.

May you like

Cole stepped in front of everyone.

Victor had stopped asking to come inside.
