Chapter 1 - The Winter’s Bite

The snow fell in thick, unrelenting sheets, biting at Emma’s cheeks as she stood on the marble steps of the estate. At her feet sat a single suitcase and a clear, hospital-grade bassinet where her newborn twins huddled beneath thin blue blankets. Their sharp, helpless cries pierced the freezing night air.
Standing in the warm, golden glow of the open doorway was her husband, Adrian, wrapped comfortably in a dark, plush bathrobe. Beside him stood his mother, Eleanor, clad in pristine silk pajamas, a crystal flute of champagne resting delicately in her hand. She looked down at Emma with unmasked disgust.
"Get out and take your bastards with you!" Eleanor’s voice was sharp, cutting through the wind.
Emma knelt instinctively, pulling one of the crying infants to her chest to shield him from the snow. "Adrian, please," she begged, her voice trembling with cold and heartbreak. "They’re ten days old!"
Adrian’s expression remained entirely flat, devoid of any paternal instinct or marital affection. "You should have thought of that before embarrassing my family."
He reached inside his robe, pulled out a thick manila folder, and tossed it callously onto the snow-covered steps. Emma scrambled to pick it up, balancing her shivering baby in one arm. She recognized the legal seal immediately.
"I'm taking full custody," Adrian stated smoothly.
Emma froze. She looked up at the man she thought she had loved, the man she had humbled herself for. Slowly, she stood. The tears stopped. Her trembling ceased. The desperate, heartbroken wife vanished, replaced by a chilling calm.
"You're sure this is what you want?" Emma asked, her voice dropping an octave, steady and absolute.
Adrian rolled his eyes. "You're done, Emma."
Without another word, Emma pulled her cell phone from her coat pocket.
May you like
"Calling a shelter?" Adrian mocked, a cruel smirk playing on his lips.
Emma stared dead into his eyes. "No." She pressed the phone to her ear. "Marcus, activate everything."
