Chapter 15 - The Distant Shadow

It was a crisp autumn afternoon, and Emma had taken the twins to a private, heavily secured park downtown. While she sat on a bench reviewing a contract, Leo and Mia chased each other through the falling golden leaves.
Across the street, hidden behind the tinted glass of a rusted sedan, sat Adrian.
He looked older, tired, and defeated. The grease from the diner seemed permanently etched into the lines on his face. He knew he was violating the restraining order just by being on this block, but a morbid, desperate curiosity had driven him here.

Through a pair of cheap binoculars, he watched the twins. They were healthy, vibrant, and completely oblivious to his existence. He watched Emma, radiant and relaxed, laughing as Leo handed her a fistful of crumpled leaves.
