Chapter 8 - No Quarter

The neon sign of the highway motel buzzed loudly outside Adrian’s window, casting a sickly red glow over the cramped, peeling room. Eleanor sat on the edge of the sagging mattress, weeping softly into a cheap tissue.

"Call the Abernathys," Eleanor pleaded. "Call the Vanderbilts! Surely someone will take us in."

"I tried, Mother!" Adrian snapped, throwing his dead cell phone onto the stained carpet. "Nobody is answering. The moment the news broke that Hayes Global Trust fired me, we became toxic. No one wants to cross the Trust."

He paced the narrow room, his mind racing. He had vastly underestimated Emma. The quiet, accommodating woman he thought he had married was a titan in disguise. He needed a strategy. If he could just get to the twins—if he could convince a judge that he was a victim of a vindictive billionaire wife—he might be able to secure alimony or a massive settlement.

"We just have to hold out until the emergency custody hearing on Friday," Adrian muttered, his eyes narrowing. "I’m the father. The courts always favor keeping the family together. I’ll make her look like a monster who kidnapped my children."
